North Union hoopsters remain unbeaten on season

ARMSTRONG — The North Union Warriors boys basketball team extended its season-opening winning streak to seven in a row.

Aiden Lofstrom delivered a game-best 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds to ignite North Union’s 77-27 rout of the Belmond-Klemme Broncos during Iowa high school action Tuesday night in Armstrong.

Dan Fothergill tossed in 11 points, pocketed five steals and doled out three assists for the Warriors, who built a 53-10 lead by halftime.

Preston Guerdet scored 11 points and generated four steals for North Union, while teammate Grady Madden delivered nine points and pocketed a game-leading six steals.

Kody Irmiter contributed eight points and cleaned the boards for seven caroms, while teammate Kyan Jones distributed a game-leading 10 assists for the Warriors.

The Warriors connected on 31 of 50 shots from 2-point range, nailed 2 of 6 behind the 3-point arc and scorched the nets on 9-for-11 free throw shooting.

North Union (7-0) plays host to Bishop Garrigan of Algona on Friday night in Armstrong.

Girls Basketball

North Union 47, Belmond-Klemme 20 — Naomi Jones produced a double-double performance to engineer the Warriors’ 27-point rout over the Broncos during Iowa prep basketball action Tuesday night in Armstrong.

Jones scored 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while teammate Olivia Merrill produced 15 points and grabbed seven boards.

Libby Stevens generated 11 points and pocketed five steals for North Union, while teammate Ainsley Ulrich chipped in six points and doled out four assists.

The Warriors made 15 of 39 shots from 2-point range, 4 of 16 behind the 3-point arc and 5 of 8 at the free throw line.

North Union (5-2) plays host to Bishop Garrigan of Algona on Friday night in Armstrong in a non-league game.

Jackson County Central 71, Luverne 61 — Rylie Cother erupted for a game-high 36 points to power the Huskies to a 10-point Big South Conference triumph over the Cardinals on Tuesday night in Luverne.

Cother became only the ninth girls basketball player in Jackson County Central history to eclipse the 1,000-point career mark. The sharp-shooting guard ended the game with 1,020 career points.

Paylin Sether tallied 13 points and Kylee Wenzel tossed in nine points for the Huskies (4-1), which play host to Windom Area on Thursday night in another conference contest.
