Junkermeier helps Cardinals tip off season with win over Titans

MONTGOMERY — Fairmont sophomore forward Logan Junkermeier made his varsity basketball debut a memorable one on Friday night.
The 6-foot-7 Junkermeier connected for a game-leading 14 points and added five rebounds to help engineer the Cardinals’ season-opening 69-48 victory over the Tri-City United Titans during nonconference action in Montgomery.
Tri-City United is a co-operative program between Montgomery-Lonsdale and Le Center.
Junkermeier, who made a pair of 3-pointers on the game, produced 11 of his 14 points during the opening 18 minutes.
Hadan Toomer connected on two 3-pointers to highlight his 12-point performance for Fairmont. Toomer also distributed a team-best five assists and pocketed three steals from his backcourt position.
Oliver Tordsen, the Cardinals’ 6-7 junior post player, tallied seven points and pulled down four rebounds, while guard Joseph Hackett supplied two 3-pointers en route to a 12-point outing in the winning cause.
Harmon Schrunk supplied 10 points for Fairmont, while teammate Blaze Geiger added five points.
Luke Holicky topped all scorers by generating 18 points for the hometown Titans, while teammate Reggie Vosejpka tossed in 16 more points.
Fairmont (1-0) travels to Waseca next Friday night for its Big South Conference opener.
Ironically, Logan Junkermeier accomplished a rare feat by netting 11 points during one half of B-squad action to power Fairmont to a 54-27 triumph over TCU on Friday night.
Tavian Harvey supplied nine points for the Cardinals, while Merritt Pomerenke hit a pair of 3-pointers to pace his eight-point performance.
Jordan Thompson, Joe Long and Jalin Jackson each scored five points to round out Fairmont balanced team effort.
Reed Johnson delivered 14 points to steer Fairmont to a 47-24 victory over TCU during C-squad action Friday night.
Brayden Williamson tallied nine points to add depth for the Cardinals.

Jackson County Central 67, Blue Earth Area 65 — Will Bromeland erupted for a game-leading 31 points but the Bucs fell just two points short in their season-opening loss to the Huskies during Big South Conference action Friday night in Blue Earth.
Bromeland made 8 of 12 from 2-point range, 3 of 8 behind the 3-point arc and 6 of 10 at the free throw line to complement his seven-rebound performance for BEA.
Branson Hauskins netted 11 points for the Bucs, Max Loge nearly posted a double-double by scoring eight points and grabbing nine boards, while Jacob Grandgenett and Gage Barker chipped in four and three steals, respectively.
Grant Freking generated 17 points, grabbed eight rebounds and doled out six assists for the Huskies, while teammate Aiven Farmer collected a double-double performance of 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Weston Rowe supplied 12 points for JCC, which made 23 of 49 shots from 2-point range, 3 of 11 behind the 3-point line and 12 of 22 at the free throw line.
The Bucs hit 16 of 30 attempts from 2-point distance, only 6 of 25 behind the bonus arc and 15 of 24 from the free throw line.
Blue Earth Area (0-1) plays host to New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva on Tuesday night in a nonconference game.

North Union 87, North Iowa 51 — Kody Irmiter and Aiden Lofstrom combined to pack a 1-2 double-double punch to power the Warriors to a 36-point rout over the Bison during Top of Iowa Conference action Friday night in Armstrong.
Irmiter scored 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while Lofstrom netted 16 points and garnered a game-high 11 rebounds on the game.
Preston Guerdet made three 3-pointers to fuel his 19-point performance for North Union to complement dishing out three assists and pocketing four steals.
Grady Madden supplied 16 points — including two 3-pointers — and doled out four assists, while Kyan Jones dished out a game-best six assists to go with seven points.
Dan Fothergill contributed three steals for the Warriors, who hit 36 of 68 field goals overall and 8 of 12 at the free throw line.
North Union (2-0) hits the road to Estherville, Iowa, on Monday night to face ELC.
