Carlson Dental Bantams win Albert Lea tournament crown
FAIRMONT — Preston Geerdes completed his hat trick by netting the game-winning goal to propel the Carlson Dental Bantams of Fairmont to a 5-4 win over Austin during Sunday’s championship hockey game of the Albert Lea tournament.
Geerdes, who finished with three goals and one assist, snapped the deadlock off a double-assist from Preston Cepress and Bryce Ihrke with 1:02 remaining in regulation.
Cepress and Ihrke also contributed one goal apiece to Fairmont’s winning effort, while Kolton Hinz and Kaden Olson delivered 19 and 18 saves, respectively, between the pipes.
Carlson Dental opened the three-day event with a 5-4 victory over Cottage Grove Black on Friday night.
Geerdes and Cepress each netted two goals, Noah Meixell chipped in a net-finding shot, while Kaden Olson and Hinz collected 24 and 16 stops, respectively.
Geerdes erupted for three goals and two helpers to propel Fairmont to a 10-4 second-round tournament win over Dodge County on Saturday.
Meixell supplied two goals and one assist, Cepress tallied one goal and two helpers, Ihrke and Hunter Olson swatted home two goals each, while Hadyn Lillevold added one assist.
Hinz turned away a dozen shots on net, while Kaden Olson made four saves to combine for the win again.
Geerdes generated another hat trick and teammate Caden Wikert produced two goals to power Carlson Dental to a 7-1 third-round triumph over host Albert Lea.
Caleb Meyer and Meixell contributed one goal and one helper to Fairmont’s wide-margin win, while Ihrke and Bryce Roeschen distributed one assist apiece.
Kaden Olson denied 31 shots on goal, while Hinz chipped in 19 saves in the win.
After sweeping four regular-season tournament games, Fairmont returned to Martin County Arena on Sunday to edge Buffalo White, 5-3, in a district game.
Hinz turned away 15 shots on net, Kaden Olson tallied six stops, Cepress and Meixell connected for two goals each, while Ihrke added one goal.
Carlson Dental Bantams (7-1) play host to Alexandria at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Martin County Arena.

The Fairmont 12U girls hockey team posted three consecutive wins during weekend ice action.
Hayden Olson produced a game-best hat trick and also doled out one assist to top Fairmont’s 6-0 victory over Windom on Saturday at Martin County Arena.
Fairmont netminder Nola Hazard earned the shutout by turning away nine shots, while Geminnie Lopez delivered two goals.
Paige Hartwig chipped in one goal for Fairmont, while Corinn Wells dished out a helper.
Fairmont then swept both ends of a doubleheader with Sioux Falls on Sunday in Fairmont.
Fairmont defeated Sioux Falls in the opener by a 3-2 decision before claiming the nightcap by a 4-1 margin.
Hazard stonewalled Sioux Falls in both contests, recording game-highs of 36 and 30 saves, respectively, to net the wins between the pipes.
Lopez scored two goals, Olson tallied one net-finding shot, while Taylor Truesdell doled out one assist in Fairmont’s 3-2 win.
Lopez collected two goals and one helper to help trigger Fairmont’s 4-1 win in Game 2.
Olson contributed one goal and one assist to the victory, Aspen Wickert tallied a goal, while Nani Rosario and London Truesdell added assists.

Marshall rolled to a 13-1 win over Fairmont on Saturday.
Logyn Luhmann scored Fairmont’s lone goal, while Mia Wiederhoeft recorded 22 saves in net.
Ellie Steuber, Luhmann and Greyson Amundson each generated goals to guide Fairmont to a 3-2 win over New Ulm/Sleepy Eye on Sunday.
Wiederhoeft netted the win between the pipes.
