FAIRMONT — Fairmont punched its ticket to the Swanson Tennis Center on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus in St. Peter for a third consecutive season.

“It doesn’t ever get old … advancing to the sectional (team) semifinals and getting the chance to play inside the dome,” Fairmont assistant coach Tim Slama said in reference to the No. 4-seeded Cardinals’ 4-3 Section 2A quarterfinal win over the No. 5-seeded Redwood Valley Cardinals on Monday. “We’re looking forward to playing St. James again.”

Fairmont (11-4) squares off against the No. 1-seeded and Class A No. 7-ranked Saints in a 9 a.m. sectional semifinal Thursday at Gustavus Adolphus College. St. James Area netted a first-round bye in the seven-team division.

Ironically, on Monday, the two sets of Cardinals squared off against the same opponents at all seven spots in the lineup from five days ago during Fairmont’s regular-season finale.

“Same lineups, nearly the same result barring illness,” said Slama.

Fairmont posted a 5-2 win over Redwood Valley last Thursday, winning the top three singles matches and claiming Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. The only difference Monday was the mid 80-degree temperatures that seemed to cause a case of heat exhaustion, forcing the Fairmont second doubles tandem to default.

“When a player looks pale and like she could faint, then it’s time to call it a day. Better to be safe in that situation,” said Slama.

The rest of the matches did not deviate from five days ago as singles netters Abi Peyman, Hope Klanderud and Emelia Klanderud — along with the third doubles team of Madi Peyman and Claire Brockmann — made the tennis scorecards tumble like dominoes.

Trailing 1-0 on the team ledger, Abi Peyman required only a baker’s-dozen worth of games to even the score at 1-all. Peyman coasted to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Lily DeBlieck at the No. 2 spot in the singles division.

Hope Klanderud joined Abi Peyman in the winner’s circle by outdueling Brooke Zollner in back-to-back 6-2 sets at No. 1 singles. Hope Klanderud trailed 1-0 and 2-1 in the opening set before reeling off seven consecutive game wins to seize the match’s momentum for good.

Emelia Klanderud then capped Fairmont’s singles wins by dealing a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Lauren Dolezal at the No. 3 position. Ironically, Klanderud lost the opening game of the first set, but registered a service break during the next two games and never looked back.

Fairmont’s third doubles tandem of Madi Peyman and Claire Brockmann then locked up the fourth and clinching team point on the strength of a 6-4, 6-2 win over Taylor Klabunde and Emmerson McCorquodale.

Peyman and Brockmann built a 3-0 opening-set lead only to have Klabunde and McCorquodale rally for four consecutive game wins to trail 4-3. Peyman and Brockmann broke back during Game 9 to trigger a six-game winning string to net both sets and the team tally.

McKenna Flinn defeated Carly Gustafson at fourth singles, 6-0, 6-1, to account for Redwood Valley’s initial team point.

Mila Jenniges and Anneliese Hammer then outslugged Fairmont’s Brynn Gustafson and Jaydan Moses in back-to-back 6-3 sets at first doubles to net another Redwood Valley tally.

Redwood Valley’s Michelle Smith and Julia Lang edged Elly Stegge and Ellie Plumhoff by a 6-4 first-set decision at second doubles before the Fairmont duo defaulted due to illness.
