NEW ULM — Fairmont head girls tennis coach Laura Olsen and assistant coach Tim Slama shuffled their doubles lineup card and netted a pivotal bracket sweep during a 5-2 Big South Conference victory over the New Ulm Eagles on Thursday.

Abi Peyman and Brynn Gustafson combined court skills and needed only one game over the minimum to claim the No. 1 doubles point for the Cardinals. Peyman and Gustafson bested Peyton Kveno and Taylor Hauenstein by a 6-1, 6-0 decision.

Jaydan Moses and Madi Peyman teamed at second doubles to generate a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Lexi Schneider and Aubrey Demarais, while Fairmont teammates Carly Gustafson and Madysen Tonne required three sets to complete the doubles division’s sweep.

Gustafson and Tonne claimed their opening No. 3 doubles set with Hannah Davey and Morgan Hauenstein by a 7-5 decision before the New Ulm tandem flip-flopped the second set’s score in their favor. Gustafson and Tonne prevailed by outdueling the Eagles’ duo in a third-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-2).

Emelia Klanderud and Ellie Plumhoff collected the Cardinals’ singles points. Emelia Klanderud defeated Joci Pettersen at the No. 3 spot in the lineup, 6-1, 6-3, while Plumhoff outslugged Carmen Schotzko at the No. 4 position, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.

New Ulm’s Karlee Prahl handed a rare extended three-set loss to Fairmont’s Hope Klanderud at first singles. Prahl prevailed by a 7-4 win in a first-set tiebreaker before Hope Klanderud earn a 7-5 victory in the second-set tiebreaker to even the hard-hitting match. Prahl claimed the decisive third set by a 6-3 decision.

Lydia King netted New Ulm’s other singles point by fending off Elly Stegge during action at the No. 2 position, 7-5, 6-4.

Fairmont (7-2) plays host to Pipestone Area at 4:15 p.m. Monday at the Cardinal Courts in Fairmont.
