U16 girls soccer wins 2 at state summer tournament

FAIRMONT — The Bank Midwest U16 girls soccer team of Fairmont generated two wins during the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) state summer championships July 15-19 at the College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph.
Nicole Zebedee and Frankie Martin each produced unassisted goals to help spearhead Fairmont’s 2-1 opening-round victory over Arrowhead/Cloquet Black.
Bank Midwest goalkeeper Mary Bennett turned away a dozen shots on net to earn the victory.
Mississippi Valley Storm Black then shut out Fairmont during second-round action 2-0.
Bennett turned in another solid performance between the pipes by recording 14 saves for Bank Midwest.
Fairmont bounced back in third-round action to squeeze out a 1-0 win over Central Minnesota.
Abbie Simpson collected Bank Midwest’s lone goal without the benefit of an assist, while Bennett delivered 14 saves again to garner the victory.

In the U18 divisional play at the MYSA state summer tournament in St. Joseph, the Associate Optometry girls team of Fairmont compiled a 1-1-1 overall record.
St. Peter kicked off the tournament by netting a 6-0 triumph over Fairmont.
Madilyn Stromberg turned away nine shots on goal for Associate Optometry.
Stromberg then produced another solid performance between the pipes, knocking away 11 shots on net to help Fairmont salvage a 1-all tie with Sartell during second-round state action.
Hadley Artz converted Elayna Anderson’s assist into Associate Optometry’s only goal.
Anna Utermarck collected a hat trick of goals, while teammate Emma Scheppmann earned a playmaker from a passing perspective to propel Fairmont to a 6-1 third-round triumph over Central Minnesota.
Utermarck’s game-best three goals were set up by Artz, Scheppmann and Kennedy Becker, respectively.
Becker also delivered a net-finding blast off an assist from Hannah Goerndt, while Scheppmann provided the assists to goals netted by Karissa Newville and Artz, respectively.
Stromberg proved strong between the pipes by notching 11 saves for the win for Fairmont.

U10 Division
Hair Etc. Blue 5, Fairmont Fire Department Red 1 — Logyn Luhmann netted a pair of goals to guide Blue to a four-goal margin of victory over Red during U10 girls soccer action on Monday night.
Jaycie Grensteiner, Emmersyn Ebeling and Harper Eisenmenger each contributed one goal to Hair Etc.’s winning ways.
Lynnie McInerney accounted for Red’s lone goal.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain/RM Driving 5, Lawn Solutions 1 — Regan Fowler generated a game-best three goals to power Granada-Huntley-East Chain/RM Driving to the win during U10 boys soccer action on Monday.
Patrick Lockwood and Logan McCarthick chipped in one goal each for Granada-Huntley-East Chain/RM Driving.
Angel Briseno netted the only goal for Lawn Solutions.
