Fairmont Legion softball to host sub-state Saturday

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont American Legion Post 36 girls fastpitch softball lineup will square off against St. James in a best-of-3 sub-state series on Saturday at Hands Park south of Fairmont.

Each game will consist of five innings with no time limit. The series’ opener will hit the diamond at 10 a.m., with Game 2 set for 11:30 a.m. After a lunch break, the ‘if needed’ third game will be played at 1:45 p.m. Saturday.

The sub-state champion advances to the Minnesota American Legion state softball tournament played July 28-30 in New York Mills.

16U caps slate with 5-1 softball victory

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Cardinal Power 16U girls fastpitch softball team posted a 5-1 win over Sleepy Eye on Tuesday to close out the regular season.

Saige Leiding went 3-for-3 to top Fairmont’s offensive effort, while Gabby Leiding delivered a pivotal two-run single. Makayla Lowry chipped in a hit.

Gabby Leiding hurled four hitless and scoreless innings of work to earn the win for Fairmont. Leiding recorded six strikeouts and did not issue a walk.

Brylee Miller merited the save by allowing one unearned run on one hit in three innings of relief. Miller struck out three and did not issue a walk.

Thompson wins I-90 basketball camp titles

FAIRMONT — Ryan Thompson netted the I-90 Basketball Camp’s overall Hot Shot and Mr. Globetrotter awards and proved part of the event’s 5-on-5 competition this week in Fairmont.

Hugo Kawecki claimed the 4th grade’s Mr. Globetrotter and Hot Shot awards, while Emmett Traetow proved the overall champion as Mr. Hustle to complement netting the 6th grade Mr. Globetrotter award.

Errol Silverthorn was the 5th grade Mr. Globetrotter, Louis Goerndt was tabbed the 5th grade Hot Shot winner, while Hudson Clayton claimed the 6th grade Hot Shot crown.

Asher Oskerson and Alec Oskerson netted the Mr. Hustle awards for 4th and 5th grade, respectively, while Louis Grensteiner captured the Mr. Hustle honor for 6th grade.

Landyn Thoeny, Grant Simmering, Ben Thompson, Leander Nelson, Ben Zarling and Kolton Gerhardt joined Ryan Thompson and Louis Goerndt on the 5-on-5 camp champions lineup.

Reds’ Williamson starts Saturday’s game

CINCINNATI — Cincinnati Reds rookie Brandon Williamson will start Saturday’s 3:10 p.m. game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Great American Ball Park.

Williamson enters the game with a 1-2 record, 4.96 ERA, 41 strikeouts and 22 walks in 52 2/3 innings pitched this season for the Reds (52-46).
