Fairmont 16U softball team places 2nd at tourney

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont 16U girls fastpitch Cardinal Power lineup produced second-place accolades at its own softball tournament on Sunday at Cardinal Park in Fairmont.

Fairmont capitalized on the international tiebreaker system to help capture its wins during both the bracket’s quarterfinal against Mankato and semifinal with South Dakota Select.

Knotted at 1-all and a runner automatically positioned at second base in extra innings, Brylee Miller legged out a bunt hit against Mankato before teammate Gabby Leiding was intentionally walked to set up a forceout.

The strategy backfired as Cardinal Power plated two go-ahead runs on Mankato defensive miscues before Haleigh Grotzinger drew a bases-loaded walk for a 4-1 Fairmont lead and eventual three-run victory.

Miller doubled and singled to top Fairmont’s offensive effort. The right-hander also recorded five strikeouts, issued one walk and allowed one run on four hits in 4 2/3 innings to earn the opening win.

Abi Sundeen’s RBI single in the top of the sixth inning staked Cardinal Power to a 4-3 lead over South Dakota Select in the semifinals before Gabby Leiding notched a game-ending strikeout in the bottom half to strand a Select runner at third base.

Gabby Leiding’s sacrifice bunt helped send Fairmont’s international runner to third base prior to Sundeen’s clutch hit.

Sundeen finished with two RBIs, Makenzie Lowry collected two hits and Miller chipped in a double.

Gabby Leiding struck out seven batters, issued only one walk and gave up three runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings to net the Game 2 win.

Mady Wachal fired a three-hit complete-game gem to propel the Minnesota Misfits of Lake Crystal to a 10-2 victory over Fairmont during the tournament’s 16U championship contest.

Wachal notched 11 strikeouts, walked three and allowed two runs on three hits in seven innings of work to net the win for the Misfits.

Sundeen produced two hits and two RBIs for Fairmont, which battled the Misfits to a tie at 2-all going into the sixth inning.

Miller contributed a hit to Cardinal Power’s offense.

Miller allowed eight runs — only one earned — on eight hits, struck out six and did not issue a walk.

Starting at $2.99/week.
