FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Junior Legion Post 36 baseball team used a 12-run inning to beat the Blue Earth Area American Legion Post 89 team 17-0 in a five-inning run-ruled game on Friday night at Herb Wolf Field in Fairmont.

“We didn’t have too many hits and had some walks to score our runs tonight,” Fairmont head coach Brian Hackett said. “Each of the three pitchers we had on the mound tonight threw hard and threw strikes. They did a good job.”

“We hit the ball hard that last inning,” Blue Earth Area head coach Jeff Bell said. “If we hit the ball like this to start the game, we would have been all right. Our kids are out playing a great game and learning out here. It was a good night for baseball.”

Post 36 scored three runs without the benefit of a hit in the bottom of the first inning. Merritt Pomerenke, Nolyn Goerndt and Joseph Hackett walked and came around to score the three runs. Nolan Anderson and Cameron Schmidtke hit sacrifice flies, while Joe Long walked with the bases loaded to also drive in a run.

Post 36 added two more runs in the second, thanks to Goerndt’s run-scoring groundout and a wild pitch, allowing Pomerenke to score.

Post 36 sent 17 hitters to the plate in the fourth inning, scoring the 12 runs off two Post 89 pitchers. Every spot in the lineup had two at-bats in the inning, except Pomerenke.

Brian Hackett’s team scored via hits, wild pitches, a hit by pitch, a ground out and a fielding error.

Joseph Hackett, Anderson, Trevor Maakestad, Long and Cole Wiemers had the run-scoring hits.

Post 89 put together a scoring threat in the fifth inning. With two outs, Drew Thomas laced a single down the third-base line and Hayden Veriede had a solid single to put runners on first and second, but the final hitter struck out to end the threat and the game.

Anderson had two hits to pace Post 36, while Pomerenke, Joseph Hackett, Maakestad, Long and Wiemers had one hit apiece. Post 36 hitters walked 13 times, plus were hit by two pitches.

On the mound for Post 36, Joseph Hackett earned the win, going two innings. He did not give up a run, hit or walk, and struck out three.

Maakestad worked two innings, giving up no runs, no hits, two walks, and struck out two.

Anderson pitched one inning and did not give up a run or walk. He gave up two hits and struck out three.

For Post 89, Kaden Ackerman took the loss, pitching three innings. He gave up nine runs — two hits, 10 walks, hit one batter and struck out one.

Brody Haughn pitched one inning for Blue Earth, giving up eight runs — all earned — five hits, three walks, one hit batter and did not record a strikeout.

Next for Blue Earth Area (0-3) is an away game at Madelia today, and next for Fairmont (1-1) is a doubleheader today in Sleepy Eye.
