B.E. Area edges New Ulm in 2AA baseball clash

BLUE EARTH -- Blue Earth Area's Levi Osborn played the hero on Thursday, hitting a one-out single to score Taylor Davids with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the No. 8-seeded Blue Earth Area Bucs past the No. 9-seeded New Ulm Eagles 8-7 in a Section 2AA first-round game at Veterans Memorial Field in Blue Earth.
Next for the Bucs (9-12) is a sectional second-round game at 5 p.m. Tuesday against the No. 1-seeded New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva Panthers in New Richland.
"It was a big, big, big win for us, and we advance," BEA head coach Paul Nienaber said. "Taylor (Davids) had the big lead-off double to start our seventh inning, and Colton (Hubly) had a perfect sacrifice bunt. It won't look pretty in the box score, but it was big for us. Levi (Osborn) had the winning hit."
The Bucs built a 7-3 lead heading to the seventh inning. They scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning on Davids' two-run double. Caleb Langager and Parker Meyers both walked and came around to score on the double. Abe Kokos also walked as the Bucs loaded the bases before the Davids' double.
The Bucs loaded the bases again in the second inning, but this time Nick Barke had a three-run double as the home team made it a 5-1 game.
The Eagles scored one run in the second inning and added two in the third on Ayden Jensen's two-run home run to left field.
The Bucs added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Barke singled home Langager.
The Eagles rallied for four runs in the top of seventh as a walk, hit by pitch, a run-scoring double, followed by four singles among the next five batters to tie the game 7-all and they had the bases loaded with only one out.
Parker Meyers came in to pitch and threw only four pitches before catching a bunt attempt and threw to third to turn the inning-ending double play.
In the Bucs' seventh, Davids led off with a double and advanced to third on Colton Hubly's sacrifice bunt. Osborn followed with the game-winning single.
Davids started and received a no-decision. He pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs -- six earned -- 11 hits, one walk, hit one batter, and struck out four. Meyers was the winning pitcher, throwing 2/3s of an inning and did not give up a run, a hit, a walk or get a strikeout.
For the Eagles, Blaine Olson started and pitched 1 2/3 innings, giving up five earned runs on two hits, five walks and struck out two. Ben Hohensee was the losing pitcher, going 4 2/3 innings, giving up three earned runs, six hits, two walks and struck out two.

Martin County West 7, BOLD 6 -- Jacob Clarke walked with the bases loaded, scoring Tyson Thiesse with the winning run to lead the No. 8-seeded Martin County West Mavericks past the No. 9-seeded BOLD Warriors 7-6 in a Section 2A game on Thursday at the Fox Sports Complex in Welcome.
The Mavericks (8-7) advance to play No. 1-seeded Sleepy Eye at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Sleepy Eye.
Clarke was 1-for-2 with a walk, two RBIs and a stolen base to pace the Mavericks. He also was hit by a pitch twice.
In addition, Wyatt Williamson was 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and an RBI, while Riley Kascht was 2-for-3 with one run scored and a double for the Mavericks.
Thiesse had a team-leading three hits, including a triple, and drove in two runs, while Cody Potts had a hit, two runs scored and two stolen bases for MCW.
On the mound, Zach Anderson was the winning pitcher, going seven innings, giving up six runs -- two earned -- on nine hits, one walk and struck out 12 for the Mavericks.
For the Warriors, Sam Sigurdson suffered the loss, pitching 2 1/3 innings, giving up two earned runs, two hits, two walks and struck out one.
