North Union’s Von Bank golfs to Day 2 of regional

PRIMGHAR, Iowa — North Union senior golfer Olivia Von Bank continued to swing powerful woods and irons, along with an accurate putter, to qualify for the second round of the Iowa Class 1A, Region 2 tournament.
Von Bank penciled in a medalist mark of 85 during Friday’s first round of the regional at Primghar Golf & Country Club in Primghar, Iowa. Von Bank birdied both the par-5 first hole and the par-5 10th hole to highlight her round of 44-41. The Warriors’ senior also connected for pars on Nos. 7, 11, 13 and 17.
Von Bank’s round of 85 guided North Union to a fourth-place team total of 444 — 26 shots off the pace to advance to the next round of the postseason.
Newell-Fonda carded a Day 1 winning team score of 372 to join Von Bank, the other top five individual scorers, runner-up South O’Brien (417) and third-place Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn (418) in second-round regional play at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Spring Valley Golf Course in Livermore, Iowa.
Von Bank outdueled Top of Iowa Conference West Division girls golfer of the year Avery Litchter of Bishop Garrigan in a playoff for top accolades during the league’s divisional meet on Monday in Eagle Grove, Iowa.
Von Bank captured the gold medal with a meet-low round of 89 to engineer the Warriors’ second-place team showing (419) to conference champion Garner-Hayfield/Ventura (400).
Amelia Fothergill and Aliyah Jones captured 16th and 18th place, respectively, for North Union during Friday’s opening regional action. Fothergill finished with a 51-57-108, Jones chipped in a 58-51-109 and teammate Hannah Nielsen closed with a 142 to wrap up North Union’s counting scores on Friday.
Fothergill fired a round of 99 to earn all-conference individual honors during the Top of Iowa Conference Meet earlier in the week with an eighth-place showing, while Jones claimed ninth overall with a 100.

Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 174, Martin County West 183, Madelia 189, St. Clair 200 — Maverick golfers Hunter Schmidt and Mitchell Weber posted respective first- and third-place finishes, but Carson Kettner led the Knights to a nine-stroke victory over the host team during quadrangular action Friday at Fox Lake Golf Club near Sherburn.
Schmidt birdied the par-5 No. 2 hole to complement six pars to earn top medalist honors with a 1-over nine-hole score of 36 for MCW.
Weber pocketed third place overall by sinking a birdie on the par-4 eighth hole to go with three pars to pace a score of 43.
Kettner rolled home a birdie putt on the par-3 fourth hole and added two pars to engineer his runner-up total of 41 for LCWM.
Kale Larson carded a 48 for MCW, while Josh Roben (56), Carson Scheff (56) and Isaak Engstrom (57) completed the host lineup’s scores.
Cross Schmidt, who sank one par, tied for sixth place overall by firing a 45 to help guide Madeia to a third-place team total of 189.
Josiah DeMaris connected for two pars to fuel a round of 46 for Madelia, while teammate Noah Tierney chipped in a 47.
Tatem Holm, Luke Stensrud and Trey Missling all penciled in 51s to complete Madelia’s performance. Holm made two pars, while Tierney added one par.
Easton Rode and Charlie Gengler each produced rounds of 44 to add scoring punch to Kettner’s team-leading 41, while Gavin Bode chipped in a 45 to complete LCWM’s counting marks.
