Levi Pooley

ST. PETER — The Class AA No. 1-ranked Fairmont Cardinals demonstrated their mettle by manufacturing a 9-6 Big South Conference baseball victory over the St. Peter Saints on Tuesday night in St. Peter.

Fairmont pounded out four doubles among its seven hits and capitalized on five hit batters, four walks and three St. Peter errors to improve to 9-0 on the spring.

Tied at 1-all, the Cardinals erupted for six runs during the top of the fourth inning to create breathing room for starting pitcher Ben Moeller.

Jack Kosbab triggered the offensive outburst by rapping an RBI double before teammate Levi Pooley hammered a two-run double. Joseph Hackett contributed an RBI ground out, while Lincoln Becker supplied a run-scoring single to highlight the mid-inning rally.

Pooley went 2-for-4 and scored once for Fairmont, while Landen Meyerdirk doubled, was plunked by a delivery and scored a pair of runs.

Cooper Steuber was hit twice, doubled and scored a run for the Cardinals, while Nate Soelter lofted a first-inning sacrifice fly, walked twice, was plunked once and crossed the plate once.

Moeller started on the mound and allowed three runs on seven hits, struck out one and walked one in 3 1/3 innings to net the winning decision for the Cardinals.

Meyerdirk gave up three unearned runs on only one hit, struck out five and walked five in 3 1/3 innings of relief for Fairmont. Schmidtke notched the save by recording the final out of the bottom of the seventh inning.

Kaeden Guida, Max Brown and Isaac Alger each collected two of the Saints’ eight hits on the game.

Fairmont (9-0) plays host to Marshall on Friday in a 4 p.m. conference doubleheader at Herb Wolf Field.
