Fairmont 1st, 2nd at home track & field quad

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Cardinals boys track & field team ran away with the title in the Fairmont quad on Thursday at the Bob Bonk Track, competing against the Jackson County Central Huskies, Martin County West Mavericks, and the St. Peter Saints.

Fairmont’s boys finished with 86 points, followed by St. Peter with 46, Jackson County Central with 41 and Martin County West with 27.

St. Peter edged the home team for the girls title, earning 72 points to Fairmont’s 66. Jackson County Central was third with 47 and Martin County West had 5.

“We had four straight days of running, so our kids are ready for a break,” Fairmont head coach Jesse Walters said. “We had a cold day to run on Tuesday and today was warmer. Everyone runs in the same elements, so I was happy with our results. The kids remain focused.”

For the boys, Nelson Remington won multiple events to lead the Cardinals, taking first in the 100- and 200-meter wheelchair events, posting times of 19.9 and 34.6, respectively.

Caleb Chambers beat teammate Taylor Austin in the 400-meter dash to take first place for the Cardinals. Chambers ran 53.8 and a step behind at the finish line was Austin at 53.9.

Gavin Artner won the 1,600-meter run for the Cardinals by a comfortable margin of almost 13 seconds. Artner had a time of 5:00.3.

Jaron Schutz, Ethan Pockrus and Tytan Tumbleson swept the 110-meter hurdles for the Cardinals, turning in times of 18.2, 18.5 and 19.1, respectively.

The Cardinals 4×400 relay team of Trey Tumbleson, Chambers, Blaze Geiger and Nolan Schultze won with a time of 3:39.5 and Sawyer Tordsen captured the top spot in the discus with a throw of 153-3.

Tordsen and Jackson County Central’s Caleb Vencura dualed in the shot put with Vancura winning the event with a throw of 52-11 1/2 compared to Tordsen’s 50-4 1/2.

Ty Nawrocki and Isaiah Lockwood also won their respective events, placing first in the pole vault and long jump with marks of 10-0 and 19- 1/2.

Trey Tumbleson won the triple jump with a mark of 37-5, one inch ahead of teammate Ethan Pockrus, who was runner-up with a mark of 37-4. Tytan Tumbleson was third to give the Cardinals a sweep of the triple jump. He had a jump of 36-1/2 to grab third.

Pockrus was third in the long jump with a mark of 18-1 3/4, and Tytan Tumbleson placed second in the high jump, clearing 5-4.

Hank Artz took third in the discus with a throw of 132-11 and third in the shot put at 46-8 1/2 for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals 4v800 relay team of Landon Gilbertson, Isaac Sheard, Nawrocki and Artner placed second to the Mavericks’ Riley Cole, Ryan Pierson, Grant Koehnen and Jamesson Forsberg with times of 8:59.5 and 8:58.7, respectively.

In addition, the Cardinals 4×200 relay squad of Allon Chen, Chambers, Schultze and Geiger took second with a time of 1:37.3.

The Cardinals 4×1400 relay team of Charles Neusch, Trey Tumbleson, Lockwood and Chen took third with a time of 45.9, while Gilbertson placed second in the 300-meter hurles with a time of 44.9.

Brier Lenort placed second in the 1,600-meter run for the Cardinals with a time of 5:13.0 and Sheard placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.0.

For MCW, the duo of Ryan Pierson and Jamesson Forsberg took first and second in the 3,200-meter run with times of 10:19.2 and 10:51.2, respectively.

Also for MCW, Joseph Forsberg, Kylar Larson, Jamesson Forsberg and Cole finished second in the 4×400 relay with a time of 3:44 and their 4×200 relay team of Berent Kosbab, Kole Hanson, Connor Pope and Carlos Rodriguez took third with a time of 1:44.9.

For the Cardinals’ girls team, Alexa Bush provided dynamic throws in the shot put and discus to win both events. Her shot put throw was 34-5 and discus throw was 98-2.

“I don’t like the feeling of placing second,” Bush said. “It’s not like I’m a sore loser, but I go into each meet trying to do my best and I try to have good technique on my throws.”

Jazlyn Geerdes won the triple jump for the Cardinals with a mark of 33-0 and was third in the long jump, posting a jump of 14-5 1/4.

In the 4×100 and 4×200 relays, the Cardinals took the top spot with times of 54.6 and 1:53.3. Kennedy Becker, Hadley Artz, Hannah Goerndt and Bella Larson ran the 4×100, while Becker, Goerndt, Harper Artz and Larson ran the 4×200.

The Cardinals took first and third in the 300-meter hurdles as Hadley Artz and Cadence Leiding ran times of 49.6 and 51.7, respectively.

Carys Gudahl won the 1,600-meter run for the Cardinals, posting a time of 6:04.2, while Corene Moeller was first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.8 and second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.9.

Larson took third in the 100-meter dash, running a 13.7 and Goerndt took third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.8 for the Cardinals.

Hadley Artz was runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.7 and their 4×400 relay team, as well as the 4×800 relay team placed second.

In the 4×400, Leiding, Madison Pluim, Ellie Ortega and Harper Artz had a time of 4:45.8, while in the 4×800, Gudahl, Audrina Suckow, Elayna Anderson and Ortega ran a time of 11:33.9.

For MCW, Ava Thate, Aspen Kosbab, Lucillia Larson and Avery Sanders took third in the 4×100 relay with a time of 55.5.

Hartke took second for MCW in the 800-meter run, posting a time of 2:40.0.

Next for the Tordsen and the mixed 4×400 relay team of Geiger, Harper Artz, Moeller and Schultze is the Hamline Elite Meet today at Hamline Uninversity. The meet begins at 4 p.m.

Fairmont hosts the Sentinel Relays on Friday, May 5, at Bob Bonk Track.

On deck for the Mavericks is an invitational meet at 4:30 p.m. today against Martin Luther/Truman/ Granada-Huntley-East Chain, Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial, Maple River, United South Central and host Blue Earth Area.
