Fairmont tracksters garner 1st, 2nd at quadrangular

ST. JAMES — The Fairmont Cardinals girls track & field team dominated Tuesday’s quadrangular, more than doubling up its nearest competitor in St. James.

Fairmont won with 152 points, followed by St. James Area with 55 points, Worthington with 39 and Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey with 19.

In the boys meet, Worthington won with 106 points, followed by Fairmont with 89, Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey with 48 and St. James Area with 32.

“The girls won pretty handily today,” Fairmont head coach Jesse Walters said. “For the boys, it was between us and Worthington. After the Sentinel Relays, we have a race a week from here on out. Our kids’ times will get better week-by-week.”

For the girls, Emelia Klanderud won the 100- and 200-meter dashes with times of 13.98 and 28.39, respectively.

Corene Moeller was victorious in the 400-meter run, posting a time of 1:03.83, while Abbie Simpson was first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:43.71.

Carys Gudahl continued the Cardinals’ winning ways, taking the 3,200-meter run with a time of 13:15.35, and in the hurdles, Hadley Artz won the 100 highs in 17.3 and the 300s in 51.48.

The Cardinals swept the hurdle events. In the 100, Cadence Leiding was second and Meredith Nemmers was third, running times of 17.73 and 18.8. In the 300 hurdles, Leiding was again second and Bella Schroeder placed third with times of 52.87 and 55.87, respectively.

Fairmont won the 4×100 relay as Kennedy Becker, Hadley Artz, Hannah Goerndt and Bella Larson took first at 55.43.

Larson, Goerndt, Harper Artz and Moeller placed first in the 4×200 with a time of 1:53.24, and the Cardinals won the 4×400 as Harper Artz, Simpson, Klanderud and Moeller finished with a time of 4:26.36.

The Cardinals swept the relays as the 4×800 squad of Simpson, Gudahl, Elayna Anderson and Ellie Ortega won with a time of 11:03.91.

Fairmont’s Alexa Bush and Kennedy Becker placed first and second in the shot put with throws of 31-4 1/2 and 29-8, and Bush won made it two wins by securing a victory in the discus with a toss ot 94-6.

Jazlyn Geerdes and Larson took first and second in the high jump as both cleared 4-6, while Gudahl was first in the pole vault with a mark of 7-0 even.

Jazlyn Geerdes and Nemmers placed second and third in the long jump with marks of 14-7 and 13-11, respectively.

In the boys meet, Sawyer Tordsen was a two-time winner, placing first in the shot put and discus with throws of 47-5 1/2 and 149-10, while teammate Hank Artz was runner-up in each event, throwing the shot put 42-5 and discus 140-11, respectively.

The Cardinals’ Ty Nawrocki and Taylor Austin finished first and second in the pole vault, clearing 10-0 and 8-6.

Fairmont’s 4×200 relay team of Trey Tumbleson, Blaze Geiger, Austin and Caleb Chambers won with a time of 1:37.12, and the 4×100 relay team of Ethan Pockrus, Isaiah Lockwood, Jaron Schutz and Allon Chen took second with a time of 47.73.

The foursome of Chambers, Austin, Nolan Schultze and Geiger also placed second with a time of 3:39.81.

Landon Gilbertson was second in the 300-meter hurdles at 44.77 and third in the 110-meter hurdles at 17.00.

Gavin Arter had runner-up finishes in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, turning in times of 4:45.21 and 10:48.26. Artner was winning the 1,600 run after the third lap, but couldn’t hang on as St. James Area’s Levi Miest outlasted him down the stretch to win with a time of 4:43.52.

Fairmont hosts Martin County West and Jackson County Central on Thursday.
