Fairmont 1st, 3rd at BSC division golf event

FAIRMONT — Solveig Senf and Anika Haugen produced top-five nine-hole performances to guide Fairmont to top team honors during Monday’s Big South Conference East Division girls golf event at Lakeside Golf Course in Waseca.

Some 90 miles away, Mathew Cone and Brock Lutterman each garnered top-seven individual honors to steer the Cardinal boys lineup to a third-place team effort during Monday’s BSC divisional event at Interlaken Golf Club in Fairmont.

Senf tied Blue Earth Area’s Payten Gudahl for third place overall with a pair of 46s to top Fairmont’s winning score of 200 — nine shots better than St. Peter and 11 on the third-place Bucs.

Haugen carded a nine-hole round of 47 to claim fifth place overall, while teammate Brynn Gustafson shared seventh place individually at 51. Senf, Haugen and Gustafson each penciled in two pars during their low-scoring ways.

Leslie Zarling fired a 56 to complete Fairmont’s counting scores, while Katherine Zelaya and Madi Peyman contributed a 64 and a 68, respectively, to round out the Cardinals’ effort.

Blue Earth Area’s Katelyn Storbeck sank three pars to highlight her nine-hole round of 44 to share medalist honors with St. Peter’s Adrianna Bixby.

Gudahl connected for two pars to pace her co-third-place round of 46 for the Bucs, Rylan Storbeck delivered a 56, Hailey Becker shot a 65 and McKinley Hanson chipped in a 66. Becker made one par on her round.

In the boys’ divisional event at Interlaken Golf Club, Anthony Nicolai pocketed runner-up medalist honors with a 39 to spearhead St. Peter’s winning team total of 162.

Kaiden Brovold and Blake Magelee shared third place individually by shooting a pair of 40s in helping pack scoring punch to the Saints’ gold-medal performance.

Cody Vagts claimed medalist accolades by carding a first-place score of 37 to pace Waseca’s runner-up score of 175, while Mathew Cone nailed down fifth place individually by penciling in a 41 to top Fairmont’s third-place total of 176.

Cone birdied the par-5 second hole and closed out the final five of his nine holes with a string of pars to highlight his 4-over round.

Lutterman displayed his touch around the greens by sinking a birdie on the par-4 ninth hole to complement two pars en route to his four-way tie for seventh place at 43.

Hartley Aust connected for three pars to pace his round of 44 for the Cardinals, while Blake Hilgendorf made one par to top his counting score of 48 for Fairmont.

Harmon Schrunk, who tallied two pars, fired a 52 for Fairmont, while Beau Becker chipped in a 57.

Ashton Lloyd birdied the par-4 ninth hole to complement his pair of pars to finish with a nine-hole round of 44 in topping Blue Earth Area’s fourth-place team total of 180 — just four strokes behind Fairmont.

Gordy Bruellman and Kyren Sunken each produced 45s for the Bucs, while Sunken draining a birdie on No. 9 to complement three pars. Bruellman topped his round with two pars.

Hunter Viland and Jackson Blondin each generated 46s for Blue Earth Area, while Max Loge chipped in a 49. Viland birdied the par-5 sixth hole and made two pars, while Loge carded a birdie on the par-5 No. 2 to go with two pars. Blondin chipped in three pars to pace his round.

Fairmont competes against New Ulm at 1 p.m. Thursday at Oakdale Golf Club, while Blue Earth Area faces Windom Area at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Minn-Iowa Golf Course in Elmore.

Martin County West 185, Truman/GHEC/Martin Luther 201 (Boys) — Hunter Schmidt and Mitchell Weber proved a formidable combination to power the Mavericks to a 16-stroke Valley Conference victory over the Jaguars on Monday at Rose Lake Golf Course outside of Fairmont.

Schmidt captured medalist honors by shooting a nine-hole round of 38, including a birdie on the par-3 seventh hole. Schmidt also connected for a meet-best five pars.

Weber claimed runner-up medalist accolades by shooting a 43, highlighted by a birdie on the par-5 fourth hole. Weber added one par on his round.

Kale Larson made two pars in firing a 51 for the Mavericks, while Josh Roben and Carson Scheff each penciled in 53s to complete the counting marks. Isaac Fett contributed a 56.

Gavin Kester made one par to pace his third-place individual round of 45 to top the Jaguars’ effort.

Landon Zimmer notched two pars to pace a 47, Lance Stevens shot a 52 with one par, while Jonah Carlson and Wyatt Luhmann each netted a 57 to cap the counting totals. Zach Flohrs added a 59.

The Jaguars travel to Madelia today for another conference dual meet, while the Mavericks are idle until hitting the road to Mountain Lake on Tuesday, May 2.
