Merrill, Prochniak lead NU track team at Spirit Lake

SPIRIT LAKE, IOWA — North Union’s Olivia Merrill placed in the top three in two events to lead the Warriors’ track and field team in Tuesday’s Spirit Lake Co-Ed Invitational meet at the Sheryl Maahs Track in Spirit Lake.

Merrill tied for second with Elliana Heisinger of Spencer in the shot put with a throw of 36-0 and was third in the discus with a throw of 103-2.

As a team, the girls finished fifth with 44 points, and the boys placed eighth with 22 points. Spencer won the girls meet with 167 points, while the host school won the boys meet with 169 points.

For the North Union boys, Bryer Prochniak won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.23. Prochniak finished ahead of Sioux Central’s Greg Peterson, who had a time of 11.39, and Spirit Lake’s Logan Sandman, who had a time of 11.84.

The boys 4×100 relay took third place as Landon Price, Carter Morphew, Preston Guerdet and Prochniak posted a time of 45.00.

The 4×100 was a close finish as only .16 was the difference between first and third. Spirit Lake’s Sandman, Jake Cornwall, Drew Alger and Joey Andres won with a time of 44.44, while Okoboji’s Tyler Sehman, Joe Salmon, Ethan Schlacher and Jimmy Santos took second at 44.62.

Other girls in the top three were Jacey Welbig in the 800-meter run and Lbby Stevens in the 40-meter dash.

Both were third, respectively.

Welbig had a time of 2:53.40 and Stevens ran a 1:08.45.

Spencer’s Peyton Morey and Okoboji’s Grace Pausley placed first and second in the 800 with times of 2:42.06 and 2:51.60, while Emmetsburg’s Rachel Schany and Okoboji’s Zoey Holmes placed first and second in the 400, running times of 1:011.75 and 1:02.90, respectivelty.

In addition for the girls, the Warriors’ distance medley foursome of Ella Ulrich, Shelby Fraker, Naomi Jones and Welbig finished second with a time of 4:45.46.

Spirit Lake’s team of Reese Keenan, Ellie Bolluyt, Faith DeWild and Charlotte Prichard was first with a time of 4:45.05.

The girls return to action today at North Iowa and the boys run Friday at Estherville Lincoln Central.
