Prochniak, Rasch strike gold for North Union tracksters

ALGONA, Iowa — Bryer Prochniak and Colin Rasch each struck gold to pace the North Union boys track & field team’s third-place showing at the Adam Sundall Relays on Monday night on the Bishop Garrigan campus in Algona, Iowa.

In the girls’ division, Shelby Fraker captured second place in the 200-meter dash and ran legs on both the runner-up 4×100 and 800 sprint relays, while teammate Olivia Merrill earned a silver medal in the shot put to top the Warriors’ sixth-place finish.

Prochniak broke the tape in the open 100 with a winning time of 10.86 seconds before anchoring the Warriors’ second-place 4×200-meter relay team’s effort. Landon Price, Carter Morphew, Preston Guerdet and Prochniak exchanged handoffs to cover the distance in 1:35.72.

Rasch heaved the shot to a gold-medal distance of 46 feet, 8 inches, while teammate Gavyn Morphew crossed the finish line in the 800-meter run in second place with a time of 2:12.49.

Fraker pocketed top honors in the 100-meter dash by crossing the finish line in 13.4 before anchoring the Warriors’ second-place 4×100 relay team’s performance.

Ella Ulrich, Naomi Jones and Beth Streuber covered the first three legs of the race before handing off to Fraker. The North Union foursome posted a time of 53.44.

Ulrich, Libby Stevens, Fraker and Naomi Jones then combined to earn a tie for runner-up accolades in the 800 sprint medley by finishing in 1:59.72.

Merrill displayed her throwing skills by claiming second place in the shot put with a toss of 35 feet even, while generating a third-place mark of 93-3 in the discus.

Jacey Welbig rounded out North Union’s top-three performances by netting a bronze medal in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:42.45.

Forest City claimed the girls’ team crown with 174 to edge runner-up Algona’s total of 164. North Union generated 62 points.

Algona garnered the boys’ team title with 89 points, with West Hancock (48) and North Union (18) taking second and third, respectively.
