FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Cardinals boys and girls track & field teams put a win on the board in their first outdoor meet of the season on Monday at Bob Bonk Track in Fairmont.

The Cardinals boys team scored 82 points, while St. Peter had 63 and United South Central had one. For the girls, Fairmont had 77 points, followed by St. Peter with 70 and USC with two.

“Overall, we had a nice meet for early April,” Fairmont head coach Jesse Walters said. “We didn’t have any one person who stood out, but I would say our throwers led the way.”

Fairmont’s Sawyer Tordsen and Hank Artz finished 1-2 in the shot put with throws of 43 feet, 3 inches and 43-1, respectively. They did not compete in the discus and when they did the shot put, they did that indoors and used a 12-pound shot.

In other field events, the Cardinals’ Gage Borntrager won the pole vault and Will Niestrath was fourth with marks of 9-6 and 7-0, respectively.

Fairmont swept the long jump. Isaiah Lockwood, Trey Tumbleson and Seth Siebring finished 1-2-3 with leaps of 18-2 1/2, 17-1 3/4 and 16-5 1/2.

The Cardinals also swept the triple jump. Ethan Pockrus won the event for the home team with a jump of 36-3, while Trey Tumbleson finished second at 35-5 1/2 and Kyler Wolters was third at 34-5.

The Cardinals also placed first in each of the four relays.

Allon Chen, Charles Neusch, Caleb Chambers and Nolan Schultze won the 4×100 relay with a time of 48.0, while Gage Borntrager, Neusch, Taylor Austin and Blaze Geiger took the top spot in the 4×200 with a time of 1:38.0.

In the 4×400, Schultze, Chambers, Austin and Geiger won a second race, this time posting a time of 3:44.6, while Landon Gilbertson, Isaac Sheard, Jaydon Putney and Ty Nawrocki won the 4×800 relay with a time of 9:27.2.

Fairmont placed second through fourth in the 300-meter hurdles. Landon Gilbertson was second with a time of 45.1, followed by Ethan Geerdes at 45.4 and Trey Tumbleson at 49.5.

Fairmont duplicated the second- through fourth-place finishes in the 110-meter hurdles. Geerdes was runner-up with a time of 18.5, while Jaron Schutz was third at 18.8 and Pockrus was a step behind and took fourth with a time of 18.9.

In the 3,200-meter run, Fairmont’s Brier Lenort placed third behind the St. Peter duo of Alexander Bur (11:29.9) and Mohamed Malin (11:52.3). Lenort’s time was 12:06.9.

The Cardinals’ Cooper Gudahl was third in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:24.4, and in the 400-meter run, it was the Cardinals’ Austin, Geiger and Adrian Sanchez placing second, third and fourth with times of 55.9, 56.2 and 59.6, respectively.

Borntrager, Trey Tumbleson and Schultze took second, third and fourth in the 200-meter dash, posting times of 24.6, 24.8 and 25.3, respectively, and it was Nelson Remington winning the 100-meter wheelchair race with a time of 19.7.

The Cardinals had another second, third and fourth in the 100-meter dash with Chambers, Chen and Lockwood running times of 12.0, 12.2 and 12.3, respectively.

For the girls, Hadley Artz won both hurdle events. She ran a time of 17.8 in the high hurdles with teammate Cadence Leiding taking second at 17.9.

The duo of Artz and Leiding also finished 1-2 in the 300-meter hurdles with times of 54.1 and 56.8 to give the home team points in each event.

“It was an all-round team effort with the girls today,” Walters said. “Again, we didn’t have an individual standout, but we had a lot of girls run some nice races for us and our field event competitors did a nice job.

“Overall, it was a good way for us to start April.”

The Cardinals also won two of the four relays on the girls’ side.

Fairmont’s 4×100 relay team of Ava Rodning, Kennedy Becker, Hannah Goerndt and Bella Larson took the top spot with a time of 57.1, and the 4×200 relay team of Hadley Artz, Harper Artz, Emelia Klanderud and Larson won with a time of 1:58.4.
