FAIRMONT — State consolation champions.

The Fairmont girls hockey team earned that honor by besting Marshall in a defensive battle, 1-0, during Sunday’s third and final round of the 75th annual Minnesota Hockey 12U B State Tournament at Faribault Ice Arena.

Ironically, Marshall squeezed out a 2-1 overtime win over Fairmont to claim the regional tournament crown two weeks ago, but Fairmont had the final word during its first-ever appearance at the state level.

Netminder Alexis Sundeen merited the shutout against Marshall by delivering a game-best 23 saves, while teammate Lexi Haycraft accounted for the state consolation final’s only goal off an assist from Lauren Bettin to pace Fairmont’s redemptive one-goal victory.

Sundeen turned away five shots on net during the opening period, eight more in the second frame and 10 during the third segment to post the win for Fairmont — which tallied 19 shots on goal.

Lexi Haycraft’s game-winning goal from Bettin came at the 12:14 juncture of the third period of the consolation championship clash in Faribault.

Mariel Parish produced two goals and Sundeen recorded 30 stops between the pipes to help Fairmont double up Edina Green, 4-2, during Saturday’s consolation semifinals.

Parish netted an unassisted twine-finder with 12:42 remaining in the opening frame before Lexi Haycraft extended Fairmont’s lead to 2-0 by cashing in an assist from Bettin at the 12:35 juncture of the second frame.

Halyn Haycraft widened the gap to 3-0 by lighting the lamp on an unassisted goal at the 12:11 mark of the third period before Edina answered with back-to-back goals.

Parish, however, iced Fairmont’s triumph by netting an unassisted goal via the power-play with 55 seconds remaining in regulation.

Sundeen turned away six shots in the first frame, 15 in the second and nine more during the third for Fairmont, which blasted 31 shots on goal.

Armstrong-Cooper used one goal and one assist apiece from Cate Cook and Natalie Staples to net a 3-1 first-round state win over Fairmont on Friday in Faribault.

Lexi Haycraft cashed in a Bettin assist to generate Fairmont’s lone goal with 2:40 remaining in the second period.

Sundeen made 21 saves in net for Fairmont, which tallied 16 shots on goal. Goalkeeper Bryn Weser stopped 15 shots to earn the win for Armstrong-Cooper.

The Fairmont 12U girls hockey team closed out its historic season with a 35-7-1 overall record.
