MCW’s Anderson sets two school basketball records in win; Fairmont girls defeat St. James

SHERBURN — Martin County West senior forward Zach Anderson etched his name into the Maverick boys basketball record books twice in one outing.
The 6-foot-6 Wayne State University basketball commit poured in a game-best 45 points to power Martin County West to an 84-59 Valley Conference victory over the Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther Jaguars on Tuesday night.
Anderson’s 45-point performance eclipsed former Martin County West standout Tony Taylor’s single-game record of 42. Ironically, Anderson doubled down during his record-setting night, surpassing Taylor’s all-time career scoring mark of 1,853. Anderson’s new Maverick record currently stands at 1,875.
Anderson also pulled down 10 rebounds to complete a double-double performance and distributed three assists for good measure.
Mitchell Weber contributed an outstanding performance of his own by nearing rare triple-double territory for the Mavericks. Weber, who eclipsed the 1,000-point career scoring plateau on Jan. 31, generated 22 points, doled out eight assists, pulled down eight boards and pocketed three steals Tuesday night.
Jamesson Forsberg contributed six points, seven rebounds and four assists to MCW’s winning ways.
Jakob Fischer continued his torrid scoring pace by tossing in a team-best 23 points to complement five rebounds and three steals for the Jaguars.
Peyton Franzen connected on four 3-pointers to collect 12 points for the Jaguars, Carter Fox chipped in eight points, while Kayden Loeschen dished out a game-leading seven assists.
The Mavericks made 22 of 34 shots from 2-point range, 10 of 26 behind the 3-point arc and 10 of 12 at the free throw line.
Anderson, Weber and Forsberg paced MCW’s 34-20 rebounding advantage on the game.
The Mavericks built a 40-29 halftime lead and never trailed.
Martin County West (14-10) plays host to Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial on Thursday night in Trimont.
Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther (12-10) plays host to St. James Area on Thursday night at Martin Luther High School in Northrop.
Fairmont 75, St. James Area 62 — Junior forward Grace Pendergast scorched the St. James gymnasium nets for four 3-pointers to pace a game-high 20-point performance in guiding the Cardinals to a 13-point Big South Conference triumph over the Saints on Tuesday night.
Pendergast also pulled down seven rebounds, while freshman guard Brylee Miller supplied 15 points on the strength of three trifectas and grabbed a game-best eight rebounds for Fairmont.
Nevaeh Rahm netted 14 points and distributed a team-best five assists for the Cardinals, Abby Cihoski delivered eight points, while Kate Busche doled out three assists.
Miller and Pendergast fueled Fairmont’s 33-22 edge on the boards.
The Cardinals hit 30 of 58 field goals for 51 percent, including 9 of 24 behind the 3-point arc, and added 6 of 9 at the free throw line.
Fairmont, which trailed by two at halftime, outscored St. James Area 41-26 in the final 18 minutes to earn the comeback win.
Taylor Sodeman scored 16 points to top the Saints, Jacey Swanson chipped in 13 points, while Madelyn Malmgren and Lunden Swanson added 10 points apiece.
Fairmont (13-9) faces St. James Area (13-11) again at 3 p.m. Saturday in a Big South Conference cross-over game in Windom to cap the regular season.
St. James Area topped Fairmont in B-squad action, 46-40, Tuesday night in St. James.
Kennedy Becker tallied 11 points to top the Cardinals, while Rubi Reyes contributed seven points.
Windom Area 68, Martin County West 31 — Hadley Sammons drained three 3-pointers to fuel her 15-point performance, while Haidyn Sammons scored 14 more to power the Eagles to a 37-point non-league triumph over the Mavericks on Tuesday night in Windom.
Alivia Letcher netted 11 points for Windom Area, while Hannah Dauer and Madi Hogan added nine points apiece in the win.
Emily Anderson connected for three 3-pointers to generate a game-high 16 points for the Mavericks, while teammate Kari Matejka added seven points.
The Eagles led 32-14 at intermission and never trailed.
Martin County West (10-12) travels to Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Thursday night.
Blue Earth Area 65, Tri-City United 50 — Ashton Lloyd erupted for a game-best double-double to march the Bucs to a 15-point nonconference decision over the Titans on Tuesday night in Blue Earth.
Lloyd blistered the nets for seven 3-pointers to finish with a game-best 31 points to complement grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds and dishing out three assists.
Austin Skaden generated 14 points and three steals for BEA, Max Loge tallied eight points and grabbed five boards, while Abram Kokos chipped in three assists and three steals.
The Bucs connected on 26 of 52 field goals, including 9 of 22 from behind the 3-point arc.
Hank Holicky and Luke Holicky each garnered 11 points to pace TCU.
Blue Earth Area (12-7) plays host to Medford on Monday night.
