St. Peter upends No. 10 Red Bulls

ST. PETER — The St. Peter Saints reeled off consecutive wins during the final four individual wrestling matches to rally for a 42-20 dual-meet triumph over the short-handed Class AA No. 10-ranked Martin County Red Bulls on Monday night in St. Peter.

Trailing 18-17, Gage Cyphers posted an 8-3 winning decision over Taylen Travaille during 170-pound action to transform the Red Bulls’ 18-17 deficit into a 20-18 lead.

Cole Filand, however, established a pinning trend for the Saints by downing Josiah Brakenhoff in 1:37 at 182 to swing a 24-20 lead to the home team.

Class AA No. 6-ranked 195-pounder Leighton Robb received a forfeit from the Red Bulls before Saints’ teammate Kemper Ely pinned Ivan Martin in 49 seconds at 220.

Max Olson, Martin County’s No. 4-ranked 220-pounder, missed the Big South Conference dual meet due to illness.

Haadi Ahmed capped the Saints’ winning ways by earning a fall in 3:42 over the Red Bulls’ Colby Schwichtenberg at heavyweight.

Pierce Rohman and Maddex Faber staked the Red Bulls to an early 6-0 lead on the team ledger by capturing winning decisions.

Rohman netted a 10-3 decision over Elijah Mercado during 106-pound action, while Faber claimed an 8-3 victory over Brock Guth at 113.

St. Peter’s 120-pounder Ryan Moelter received a forfeit before Saints’ teammate Charlie Born flattened Evan Welcome in 1:10 during 126-pound action.

Berent Kosbab answered for the Red Bulls by posting a 10-7 decision over Deontre Torres at 132 before St. Peter’s Nakiye Mercado squeezed out a 5-4 decision over Riley Cole during 138-pound action.

Aden Welcome countered by edging Evan Walter by a 3-2 decision at 145 for the Red Bulls, but St. Peter’s Harold Born kept the pendulum swinging back-and-forth by nipping Cooper Steuber via a 3-0 decision at 152.

No. 4-ranked 160-pounder Carver Rohman then generated five pivotal team points for the Red Bulls by amassing a technical fall in 5:46 over Saints’ opponent Joseph Connor.

Rohman improved to 35-1 on the current wrestling season.

The Martin County Red Bulls (13-2) travel to Madelia on Thursday for a 5 p.m. nonconference triangular against the host Madelia/Truman Jayhawks and Tri-City United.
