Keith powers Waseca gymnasts past MCA

WASECA — Waseca freshman phenom Layla Keith made a clean sweep of all four individual pieces of gymnastics equipment Tuesday night to capture the all-around crown.

Keith and teammate Lindy Caldwell produced a respective 1-2 showing in the overall competition to guide the hometown Bluejays to a 123.675-118.225 victory over the Martin County Area Magic during a Big South Conference dual meet in Waseca.

Keith generated a first-place total of 33.375 points by vaulting off the table for a winning mark of 8.775, chalking up a No. 1 score of 7.55 on the uneven parallel bars, keeping her balance on the beam en route to a first-place score of 8.0, while flooring the competitive field with a top floor exercise total of 9.05.

Caldwell, who captured second place on the balance beam with a 7.775, netted runner-up all-around accolades for Waseca with a mark of 30.4. Caldwell also placed fourth on the vault with an 8.35.

Lillie Schultz and Mollie Leiding topped the Magic’s performance by garnering third and fourth place, respectively, in the all-around. Schultz captured third overall with a 29.8, while Leiding finished fourth at 28.575.

Abi Chavez, Schultz and Mollie Leiding paced MCA’s top-four showings on the floor exercise to trail only Keith in the scoring column. Chavez claimed second place with an 8.375, Schultz tumbled to third place at 8.2, while Leiding pocketed fourth at 8.0.

Jadyn Montgomery, Chavez and Ava Thate delivered top-five efforts on the uneven bars for the Magic. Montgomery nailed down third with a 7.225, Chavez followed in fourth at 7.025, while Thate generated a fifth-place mark of 6.85.

Schultz and Mollie Leiding topped MCA’s point production on the beam with a third-place 7.175 and a fifth-place 6.75, respectively, while Chavez prevented a top-five Waseca sweep on the vault by producing a fifth-place total of 8.3.

Martin County Area plays host to Luverne next Tuesday night in a rescheduled Big South Conference dual meet at 6 p.m. at Live Fit Sport & Wellness Center in Fairmont.
