Stromberg, Hanson, Artner tabbed Fairmont fall sports MVPs

FAIRMONT — Madilyn Stromberg, Macy Hanson and Gavin Artner each earned most valuable honors for Fairmont Area Cardinal athletic teams this fall.

Stromberg, a junior goalkeeper, averaged 13.83 saves per game to top the Big South Conference statistical charts in 2022.

Stromberg, who was tabbed honorable mention all-BSC, became the first keeper in Fairmont Area girls soccer history to earn the program’s MVP award.

Hanson, a sophomore, crossed the Class AA state cross country meet’s 5K finish line in a fourth-place time of 18:36.5 to earn all-state honors at St. Olaf College in Northfield for a second consecutive season.

Artner, a junior, just missed qualifying for state by placing 16th overall in a time of 17:15.61 at the Section 2AA Meet.

In addition to Artner being selected as the Cardinal boys cross country team’s most valuable runner, sophomore teammate Andrew Haugen was tabbed as Fairmont’s most improved this season.

Freshman Brier Lenort was named hardest worker, sophomore Jaydon Putney netted the rookie of the year award, freshman Cooper Gudahl received the Cardinal Award, while freshman Braydon Lindsay took home the outstanding junior varsity runner award.

Freshman Kendra Blomster was tabbed as the girls program’s most improved, while senior Lily Higgins proved the team’s hardest worker in 2022.

Seventh-grader Brooklyn Stone claimed the rookie of the year award, freshman Audrina Suckow garnered the Cardinal Award, while seventh-grader Gwyneth Schultz was named outstanding junior varsity runner.

In addition to Stromberg’s postseason soccer accolades, the senior trio of Emma Scheppmann, Anna Utermarck and Abby Cihoski collected most valuable team honors. Scheppmann and Utermarck were named co-offensive MVPs, while Cihoski exited the field as the defensive MVP.

Freshman Maia Goerndt was tabbed as the Cardinals’ rookie of the year, while senior Jayden Smith and sophomore Grace Simpson shared the most improved honor.

Senior Allison Janssen received the Cardinal Spirit Award, while Stromberg and junior Elayna Anderson were chosen as captains for the 2023 Fairmont Area girls soccer lineup.

Scheppmann also earned a spot on the all-Big South Conference first team, while Cihoski and senior Kate Busche joined Stromberg as honorable mention selections.
