Martin Co. West volleyball collects 3-0 victory over St. Clair

ST. CLAIR — The Martin County West Mavericks produced 30 kills and served a dozen aces to power a three-game sweep over the St. Clair Cyclones during Valley Conference volleyball action Thursday night in St. Clair.

The Mavericks reeled off consecutive game wins of 25-11, 25-18, 25-11.

Emily Anderson and Lucy Larson packed a lethal 1-2 punch in the front row for Martin County West, generating 10 and nine kills, respectively.

Bella Lange, Aspen Kosbab and Liv Borchardt each contributed three spike-winners to the offensive marks.

Grace Bicknase distributed a match-best 26 set assists for the Mavericks, while Lina Arnold and Kosbab topped the blue-and-black attack’s effort at the service line by chalking up four aces each.

Arnold connected on 18 of 19 serves, Larson proved 12 of 14 from the end line, while Marah Steele proved perfect in all 12 serves to collect two aces.

Bicknase chipped in a 9-for-11 serving effort, while Kosbab added 8-for-11 at the line.

Larson topped MCW’s defensive performance by making 14 digs, while Kosbab chipped in 13 scoops. Anderson supplied seven digs, while Bicknase tallied five more.

The Mavericks served 61 of 73 as a team for an accuracy mark of 84 percent.

Martin County West (7-10) competes in the Maple River Invitational starting at 9 a.m. Saturday in Mapleton.

Alden-Conger 3, Truman/Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain 0 — The hometown Knights swept all three games from the visiting Jaguars during Valley Conference action Thursday night in Alden.

Alden-Conger collected the team triumph by capturing consecutive game scores of 25-6, 25-10, 25-16.

Londyn Bowers and Brianna Petrowiak each smacked four kills to top the Jaguars’ offensive performance, while Bethany Petrowiak delivered three kills.

Ella Nagorske and Hayley Stensland each distributed seven set assists for the purple-and-black attack, while Johnnie Zaharia doled out three set assists.

Stensland also topped the Jaguars’ effort at the service area by generating one ace on the strength of a 7-for-7 performance, while Nagorske connected on 6 of 6 serves for one ace.

Johnnie Zaharia topped the Jaguars’ defensive effort by making 15 digs, while teammate Mandy Pytleski contributed eight digs.

Bethany Petrowiak tallied eight blocks, while Bowers, Stensland and Sarah Matasovsky each contributed four rejections.

Truman/Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain participates in the Maple River Invitational starting at 9 a.m. Saturday in Mapleton.
