Patriots rally to eclipse Jaguars in overtime opener

GRANADA — The Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman Jaguars lost in heartbreaking fashion in their first game of the 2022 season on Thursday night in Granada.

The Hills-Beaver Creek Patriots scored a touchdown and converted the two-point conversion in overtime to beat the Jaguars, 28-26.

The game was tied 20-20 after regulation and the Jaguars had the ball first in their overtime possession, which began at the Patriots’ 10-yard line.

Kayden Loeschen ran 10 yards for a touchdown, but the two-point conversion failed, leaving the Jaguars with a six-point lead.

The Patriots had their chance to score and either win, lose or send the game to a second overtime.

Justin Roelfs ran 11 yards for the tying touchdown and Sawyer Bosch ran in the winning two-point conversion for the Patriots.

The Jaguars built a 20-0 first-quarter lead.

Kaiden Musser threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Carter Brudelie with 7:54 left in the opening quarter. Musser completed the two-point conversion pass to Hunter Grathwohl to give the home team an 8-0 lead.

Musser threw an 89-yard scoring pass to Grathwohl, but Musser’s two-point conversion pass was no good. With 3:53 left in the first quarter, the Jaguars had a 14-0 lead.

Brudelie intercepted Bosch’s pass and returned it for a touchdown. Once again, the two-point try failed, but with 2:48 remaining in the opening quarter the Jaguars built a 20-0 lead.

The Patriots chipped away, cutting the deficit to 20-6 with 4:33 left in the third quarter. Bosch ran 2 yards for a TD, but the two-point try failed.

At the 4:48 mark of the fourth quarter, Bosch continued scoring on a 10-yard run to make it 20-12. The two-point conversion failed.

Bosch intercepted Musser’s pass on the Jaguars’ ensuing possession and returned the pass for a score, bringing the Patriots within two points of tying the game.

Bosch ran in the conversion, tying the game with 4:05 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Neither team put any points on the scoreboard during the final four minutes, sending the game to overtime.

The Jaguars’ Musser completed 12-of-32 passes for 226 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions.

Loeschen rushed for 44 yards on seven attempts out of the backfield, teammate Matthew Steuber caught four passes for 103 yards, while Grathwohl pocketed one reception -the 89-yard touchdown for the Jaguars.

The Patriots’ Sawyer Bosch passed for only 28 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions, but rushed for 131 yards on 33 carries with two scores.

HBC had the ball for 36:59, compared to only 10:51 for the home team. The Patriots used their running game to gain 17 first downs to 12 for the Jaguars.

The Patriots had eight penalties for 55 yards, while the Jaguars had seven penalties for 59 yards.

Defensively, the Jaguars’ Jayden Bellecourt had two sacks, while Brudelie had both of the Jaguars’ interceptions. Roelfs had two interceptions, while Harnack and Bosch each had one interception for the Patriots.

Loeschen led the Jaguars with 12 tackles.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman (0-1) travels to Westbrook to play the Westbrook/Walnut Grove Chargers at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10.
