Meyer fires no-hitter, leads Warriors to 12-0 win

SWEA CITY -- North Union junior pitcher Emily Meyer broke two school records and earned career strikeout No. 600 in the Class 2A, No. 2-ranked Warriors' 12-0 run-ruled Top of Iowa Conference softball win over the Forest City Indians on Friday night in Swea City.
Meyer recorded No. 600 in the top of the first inning by striking out Keevan Jones swinging. Meyer broke the school strikeout record during the game before, topping former North Union all-state selection Anna Ingalls' mark of 589.
Meyer pitched a complete-game no-hit shutout, but plunked Forest City's No. 7 batter Dru Seglem leading off the third inning to lose the perfect game. Meyer struck out nine of the 10 hitters she faced.
Meyer is the North Union softball program's leader in career wins with 67 and shutouts at 27. Anna Ingalls was the previous record holder for wins, while Anna Ingalls and older sibling Allie Ingalls shared the Warriors' record for shutouts.
"I've been working hard since eighth grade for this moment," North Union's Meyer said. "Breaking these records today is an honor."
Samantha Bergstrom took the loss for Forest City, giving up 12 runs on 10 hits, walked five and struck out two.
The Warriors scored four runs in each of the three innings and benefitted from four Forest City fielding and throwing miscues.
"It was a good game on our part, and great game for Emily to set those school records," North Union head coach Kim Price said. "We actually had a couple of days of practice this week, which helped us with team bonding."
Meyer helped her own cause at the plate, collecting two hits, including a long solo home run in the second inning, and finished with three RBIs. She also came within a foot from hitting a grand slam in the third inning, but left fielder Keevan Jones made the catch while crashing into the fence, allowing Sam Nielsen to score from third on the sacrifice fly.
Shelby Fraker drove in three runs with two hits for the Warriors, while Nielsen led the way with three hits and three runs scored.
Cassie Beadle, Maggie Engelby and Lexi Vaske had one hit apiece. Beadle and Engelby were on base each of their three trips to the plate, thanks to two walks to go with a single. Beadle also scored three runs.
North Union, which improved to 16-2 overall, competes in the West Sioux Tournament today in Ireton, Iowa.
The Warriors play the Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley Nighthawks at 10:45 a.m. and West Sioux Falcons at 12:30 p.m.
