Area golfers ready to tee off state meets
FAIRMONT — The area’s seven individual state golf qualifiers fit into three different categories — advanced individually during prior spring seasons, earned a spot as a member of a qualifying team or today’s tee time will be their state debut.
Fairmont sophomore Brynn Gustafson and junior Solveig Senf, along with Blue Earth Area junior Ashton Lloyd, all hit the fairways at Ridges at Sand Creek golf course in Jordan as integral members of the Cardinal girls and Buc boys teams in 2021.
In fact, Lloyd earned all-state accolades by firing a two-day total of 78-72-150 to help guide Blue Earth Area to a fourth-place showing the Class AA state competition with a 621 a year ago.
The long distance-hitting Lloyd also carded a 182 during the 2019 state tourney and a 187 as a seventh-grader in 2018 as part of the Bucs’ team performances.
Lloyd will be the area’s first golfer to tee off today when he joins Rochester Lourdes’ Alex Olson, Southwest Christian’s Hayden Kleynhans and Glencoe-Silver Lake’s Zach Meyer on No. 1 at 8:24 a.m. in Jordan.
Gustafson will step to the No. 10 tee box at Ridges at Sand Creek at 1:21 p.m. today to compete in a first-round foursome consisting of Academy of Holy Angels’ Avary Reichel, Litchfield’s Kaity Kusler and Mound Park Academy’s Maya Merchant.
Gustafson penciled in a two-round mark of 110-102-212 as Fairmont’s girls lineup placed seventh at the 2021 Class AA state meet with a 763.
Senf returns to Jordan today for a 1:30 p.m. tee time — the final one of the day — off of No. 10 with Totino-Grace’s Caylin Cantwell, Zimmerman’s Paige Johnson and Hawley’s Sophie Cook.
Senf carded a 98-89-187 to net one of the Cardinals’ counting scores during last spring’s Class AA state tournament experience at Ridges at Sand Creek.
“Both Solveig and Brynn have played Ridges a number of times, so they’re familiar with the layout of the course, but you never know about where the pin placement will be,” said Fairmont head coach Brad Haugen.
2021 Class AA state champion Mallory Belka of Perham will tee off of No. 1 at 1:30 p.m. today in hopes of defending her crown in Jordan.
Blue Earth Area sophomore Payten Gudahl and Buc eighth-grader Katelyn Storbeck each will make their Class AA state golf debuts off of the 10th hole at Ridges at Sand Creek.
Gudahl will join Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa’s Alexis Knott, Delano’s Lucy Fobbe and Hermantown’s Nicole Nelson at 12:54 p.m. today in Jordan.
Storbeck will follow her cousin and Buc teammate in a 1:03 p.m. quartet comprised of Delano’s Cora Beeler, Rochester Lourdes’ Ellie Leise and Hermantown’s Izy Fairchild off of No. 10.
In the Class A boys state golf tournament today at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker, Martin County West’s low-scoring tandem of Mitchell Weber and Hunter Schmidt will hit the tee box on No. 1 for their opening round.
Schmidt tied for 35th place overall by carding a two-round total of 84-85-169 during the 2021 Class A state event in Becker.
Schmidt will join Lac qui Parle Valley’s Carson Besonen, Fillmore Central’s Jake Fishbaugher and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley at 9 a.m. for the final tee time of Day 1 at Pebble Creek Golf Club.
Weber, who did not compete during the 2021 golf campaign, did, however, qualify for the state tournament in 2018. Weber earned a share of 36th place individually by scoring an 85-86-171.
Weber will join the group of Heritage Christian Academy’s Evan Villagomez, Hayfield’s Keegan Bronson and Fosston’s Tony Carlin off of the first hole at 8:51 a.m. today in Becker.
Fertile-Beltrami senior Rylin Petry will look to defend his Class A boys state golf championship today, with his tee time set for 8:15 a.m. off of the first hole at Pebble Creek Golf Club.
The Class AA and A golfers will conclude the state tournaments on Wednesday at their respective courses.
