Blue Earth Area golf trio qualifies for Class AA state meet

NEW PRAGUE — Victoria Woytassek and Morgan Eckman packed a 1-2 scoring punch to propel the Jordan Jaguars to a seven-stroke margin of victory over Round 1 leader Blue Earth Area during Tuesday’s second and final round of the Section 2AA girls golf meet at New Prague Golf Club.
Blue Earth Area carded a first-place team total of 378 last week, clinging to a one-shot lead over Holy Family Catholic and three strokes over Jordan heading into the competition’s final 18 holes back in New Prague.
Woytassek captured sectional medalist honors by carding a two-day total of 159, while Eckman earned runner-up medalist accolades by shooting a 164 to pace Jordan’s 365-375 second-round edge over Blue Earth Area to pace an eventual 746-753 winning margin. St. Peter netted third with 759, while HFC finished fourth at 780.
Blue Earth Area eighth-grade phenom Katelyn Storbeck and sophomore sensation Payten Gudahl, however, joined Buc boys golfer Ashton Lloyd in advancing to the Class AA state golf tournament via top five scores not tallied by members of the sectional championship lineup.
Storbeck captured sixth place overall by penciling in back-to-back rounds of 91 en route to a 182. Storbeck connected on a team-leading five pars to qualify for state at Ridges @ Sand Creek Golf Course in Jordan on June 14-15.
Gudahl garnered the seventh-best individual score at 93-90-183 to punch her ticket to state. Gudahl fired a 44-46 on Tuesday, including a birdie on the par-4 third hole, to complement three pars.
Kylie Rosenau and Rylan Storbeck completed Blue Earth Area’s counting scores for the sectional competition. Rosenau tied for 10th place individually by firing a 96-95-191, including a 50-45 during second-round play Tuesday. Rosenau sank two pars to highlight her performance. Rylan Storbeck generated a 98-100-198 total, including a 47-53 on Tuesday. Storbeck closed her 36-hole total with three pars.
Madison Ehrich produced a two-round score of 201 for Blue Earth Area, while Liz Beeler chipped in a 216. Ehrich fired a 102-99, while Beeler penciled in a 109-107 for the Bucs.
In the Section 2AA boys meet, BEA’s Ashton Lloyd advanced to the state meet by penciling in a two-round total of 162 to claim the fifth and final qualifying spot. Lloyd opened with a 42-39-81 last week before closing with a 43-38-81 on Tuesday. Lloyd birdied the par-4 16th hole to complement an incredible 10 pars.
BEA’s Nathan Murphy finished 24th at the sectional by closing with a two-round mark of 180. Murphy shot an 86-94, including a 46-48 on Tuesday in New Prague. Murphy birdied the par-4 eighth hole on Tuesday to go with three pars.
St. Peter’s Kaiden Brovold carded a two-day total of 147 to capture sectional meet medalist honors and a state bid, while PJ Herron and Mick Herron garnered second and third, respectively, to power Holy Family Catholic to the sectional team championship. PJ Herron fired a runner-up 149, while Mick Herron claimed the bronze medal with a 152.
Holy Family Catholic shot a 615 to earn a Class AA state team bid, with St. Peter and Southwest Christian of Chaska sharing runner-up sectional team honors at 643. Glencoe-Silver Lake placed fourth at 669.
