Fairmont tracksters sweep quad

FAIRMONT — The host Fairmont Cardinals boys and girls track and field teams won their quad meet Tuesday, running away from the field.

The Cardinals’ boys won with 137.5 points, followed by New Ulm with 40, St. James Area with 39 and Blue Earth Area with 26.5

Fairmont won 13 events, including Evan Meade in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11 seconds flat. James Johnson of Fairmont was fourth at 12.0.

In the 200-meter dash, Hudson Artz was first with a time of 22.6 for the Cardinals ad Jacob Grandgenett of BEA was third at 24.0.

Fairmont’s duo of Andrew Johnson and Isaac Sheard placed second and third in the 800-meter run with respective times of 2:14.2 and 2:18.3. Angel Martinez of BEA took fourth at 2:21.2.

In the 1,600-meter run, Will Niestrath, Ty Nawrocki and Andrew Haugen finished second, third and fourth with times of 5:19.7, 5:25.2 and 5:27.8, respectively.

Gavin Artner and Landon Weber of Fairmont ran times of 10:58.3 and 12:40.8 to take runner-up and fourth in the 3,200-meter run, while the Cardinals swept the 300-meter hurdles with Ethan Geerdes, Landon Gilbertson and Jaron Schultz posting timesof 45.3, 45.5 and 49.1.

In the 4X100 relay, Fairmont’s ‘A’ squad won as Meade, David Maakestad, James Johnson and Artz had a time of 45.8. BEA’s ‘A’ team of Waylen Douglas, Bruk Sonnicksen, Austin Skaden and Jack Norman took third at 48.6.

The Cardinals and Bucs took the top spot and runner-up in the 4X200-meter relay as Meade, Blaze Geiger, Carson Pomerenke and Trey Tumbleson won with a time of 1:37.0 and Gage Barker, Norman, Aaron Lorenz and Grandgenett placed second with a time of 1:39.9.

Gage Cyphers, Maakestad, Geiger and Artz ran the Cardinals to first place in the 4X400-meter relay with a time of 3:35.0 and the foursome of Austin Stauffer, Skaden, Thomas Golly and Martinez took fourth at 4:02.0.

Fairmont was the only team to field a 4X800-meter relay. It had a time of 9:17.8.

Taking first and second in the shot put were the Cardinals’ Hank Artz and Sawyer Tordsen with throws of 48 feet, 3.25 inches, and 42-11, while the Bucs’ Luke Norman and Jack Norman finished third and fourth with throws of 40-2 and 40-0.

In the discus, Sawyer Tordsen of Fairmont won with a throw of 149-10. He was followed BEA’s Luke Norman and teammate Hank Artz with efforts of 139-4 and 129-7.

Armando Hernandez of Fairmont was first in the high jump, clearing 6 feet even and Austin Stauffer of BEA took fourth with a mark of 5-6.

In the pole vault, Cardinals’ Gage Borntranger was runner-up with mark of 9-0 and Bucs’ Blair Lunz was third at 9-0.

Fairmont’s Tumbleson won the long jump with a leap of 19-.5 and teammates Hernandez and Isaiah Lockwood took third and fourth, respective, with jumps of 18-2.5 and 18-2.25.

Finally in the triple jump, Hernandez helped the Cardinals take the top four spots with Borntrager, Ethan Pockrus and Kyler Wolters behind him with marks of 37-6.5, 36-5 and 36-4.75.

In the girls’ portion of the meet, Fairmont more than doubled runner-up BEA, which had 54.5, followed by New Ulm with 28.5 and St. James Area with 17.

Fairmont’s Carissa Saxton won the open 100 with a time of 13.2 and Mackenzie Householder of Fairmont was third at 13.50. BEA had two runners in the top five, placing fourth and fifth with times of 13.80 and 13.90. Lauren Bleess was fourth and Eloise Blair was fifth.

Fairmont’s Corene Moeller won the 200 with a time of 27.0, followed by BEA’s Addison Armstrong at 28.3, Fairmont’s Emily Frank at 29.0 and Fairmont’s Angelica Kerekes at 29.2.

In the 800, Laura Thompson, Ellie Ortega and Abbie Simpson of Fairmont took first, second and third with times of 2:28.4, 2:44.5 and 2:44.6.

Ortega won the 1,600 with a time of 6:05.4 and teammate Elayna Anderson was third at 6:37.3.

The Cardinals and Bucs had the only four competitors in the 3,200. The Cardinals’ Carys Gudahl and Season Kotewa finished first and third with times of 12:54.2 and 14:02.8, while Bucs’ Calli Ferguson and Aubrey Woodwick took second and fourth with times of 13:33.3 and 14:46.5, respectively.

Fairmont’s Ellie Hernes, Cadence Leiding and Bella Schroeder placed first, second and third in the 300 hurdles turning in times of 49.3, 52.9 and 54.8. BEA’s Leah Becker was fifth at 1:02.6.

The Fairmont ‘A’ team was first in the 4X100 relay with Claire Nemmers, Meredith Nemmers, Householder and Jazlyn Geerdes posting a time of 55.1. The BEA foursome of Eloise Blair, Sophia Keister, Lauren Bleess and Tailor Douglas took fourth at 1:01.6.

Claire Nemmers, Saxton, Householder and Moeller cruised to a first-place placement in the 4X200 relay with a time of 1:52.8 and BEA’s group of Addison Armstrong, Kate Armon, Lauren Bleess and Douglas was second at 1:55.7.

Fairmont had two teams place in the top four in the 4X400 relay. The foursome of Brooklyn Pfeffer, Macy Hanson, Saxton and Moeller won with a time of 4:18.6 and the group of Schroeder, Leiding, Anderson and Laura Toppel took fourth with a time of 4:50.1.

BEA finished fifth in the 1,600 relay as Elizabeth Jacobson, Sidney Eitzman, Leah Becker and Aubrey Hueper placed fifth with a time of 5:08.4.

Elayna Anderson, Madison Pluim, Johanna Wepfer and Gudahl paced the Cardinals to a first place in the 4X800 relay, turning in a time of 11:31.0 and the Bucs’ Eitzmann, Lola Faulhaber, Hope Goette and Lorenz took runner-up with a time of 13:40.9.

In the shuttle hurdles, Fairmont’s Claire Nemmers, Leiding, Anna Utermarck and Hernes won with a time of 1:10.7 and BEA’s Eloise Blair, Lizzy Uecker, Lunz and Lauren Survis finished second, posting a time of 1:18.5.

In the field events, Fairmont won three, including Alexa Bush in the shot put with a throw of 31-4. BEA’s Chloe Groe was second at 30-11. Fairmont’s Householder placed third with a throw of 30-4.

Bucs’ Groe won the discus with a toss of 105-6, while Cardinal Kennedy Becker took third with a throw of 86-11.

Keister of BEA won the high jump, clearing 5-0 and a duo of Fairmont competitors, Shaye Dietz and Vanessa Bliesmer placed second and third, respectively, with jumps of 4-6. Blair of BEA was fourth with a mark of 4-4, tying Fairmont’s Utermarck.

Bucs’ Armstrong was second in pole vault with a vault of 8-6. Cardinals’ Bliesmer and Rachel O’Connor took third and fourth with marks of 8-6 and 8-0, respectively.

In the long jump, Fairmont had the top two finishes with O’Connor winning with a jump of 14-3 and Geerdes followed with a jump of 13-10.25.

Hernes won another event, taking the triple jump, clearing 35-8.75. Geerdes, Franik and Claire Nemmers followed with jumps of 32-6, 31-8.5 and 30-4.5, respectively.

Next for the girls’ squad is the state True Team finals at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Stillwater High School.

“We really don’t have a weak event,” Fairmont head coach Bob Bonk said. “We just don’t have any event that I see which we are weak in and that will help us. We have some really talented athletes.”
