FAIRMONT — Perfect timing.
Right-hander Jacob Crissinger pitched five stellar innings, Eli Anderson delivered a pivotal two-run single and catcher Zach Jorgensen tossed out two runners to power Fairmont to a 6-3 Big South Conference baseball victory over the New Ulm Eagles on Tuesday.
“With the weather creating havoc with our schedule, it probably seems like Jacob pitches every game for us,” Fairmont head coach Don Waletich said with a laugh.
Ironically, the 6-foot-5 Crissinger notched his third consecutive pitching victory by allowing only one unearned run on five hits in five frames of work. Crissinger struck out one and issued one walk.
Anderson gave up two runs on four hits, fanned one and walked one in closing out the final two innings on the mound at Herb Wolf Field to earn the save and improve Fairmont’s early-season record to a perfect 4-0.
“Jacob proved outstanding on the mound again for us today,” said Waletich. “He didn’t have his best stuff, but part of that was due to the cold temperatures (36 by the game’s completion), but he kept us in a close game with a team like New Ulm.
“Our defense did a solid job of backing his pitching, but more importantly, we finally got some timely hitting in the latter innings.”
Tied at 1-all heading into the bottom of the fourth, Anderson set the table for Fairmont by drawing his second walk of the game before swiping second base. Lincoln Becker then smacked an RBI single to left field to snap the deadlock at 2-1.
After Becker, who alertly advanced to second base on an outfield error via his hit, tagged and moved 90 feet to third on Jorgensen’s long flyout to right. Becker then crossed the plate for a 3-1 lead on Jack Kosbab’s second hit and second RBI of the contest.
Anderson then delivered two more insurance runs during the home half of the fifth. Nate Soelter, Brendan Schmidtke and Levi Pooley drew walks to load the bases before Anderson welcomed New Ulm reliever Ben Hohensee with a key two-run line-drive single to extend Fairmont’s margin to 5-1.
New Ulm cleanup batter Jaden Drill smacked a one-out solo home run off of Anderson in the top of the sixth, but Fairmont’s closer worked out the jam by picking off an Eagle runner between first and second base.
Anderson went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two walks, Becker singled home a run and scored twice, Kosbab went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Jorgensen and Landen Meyerdirk added singles for the Cardinals.
Jorgensen displayed his strong and accurate arm behind the plate by throwing out New Ulm speedster Maddox Mortensen trying to steal second in the second before nabbing Jaden Miller attempting to advance to third on a dropped high pitch in the third.
Mortensen topped all batters by going 3-for-3, while Miller and Ryan Wiltscheck each went 2-for-3, with Miller delivering a double. Jack Albrecht doubled and drove in a run for the Eagles.
Carter Lang started on the hill for New Ulm, allowing one unearned run on two hits in three innings to receive a no-decision. Lang issued six walks and struck out three.
Taylor Hansen gave up four earned runs on two hits, walked four and fanned two in 1 1/3 innings of relief to absorb the loss.
Fairmont (4-0) plays host to Worthington at 6 p.m. Thursday back at Herb Wolf Field.
