21 area athletes merit all-Big South Conference honors
FAIRMONT — … and the final votes have been tabulated.
The administrators of the Big South Conference released two of the final three first teams and honorable mention selections for the 2021-22 athletic seasons on Monday.
Only boys basketball has not been officially released due to conference member New Ulm still being active in the postseason. The Eagles will play Mankato East at 7 p.m. Thursday night in the Section 2AAA championship game at Minnesota State University in Mankato.
Without further ado, here are the area’s 21 student-athletes earning all-league accolades for their efforts on the playing surface and in the classroom during the five winter sports campaigns featuring gymnastics, wrestling, boys hockey, girls hockey and girls basketball.
Fairmont’s skilled senior trio of Cadee Becker, Rayah Quiring and Maggy Totzke garnered selections to the all-Big South East Division’s first-team girls basketball list.
Becker, a hard-working undersized post player, along with the long-distance sharpshooting backcourt tandem of Quiring and Totzke, powered the Cardinals to a 24-4 overall record this season and the program’s first appearance in the Section 3AA championship game since 2015.
Senior forward Madeline Schiltz of Blue Earth Area netted honorable mention status for her solid performances throughout 2021-22.
Moving from the hardwood playing surface to the canvas, eight Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls and a pair of Blue Earth Area Bucs collected spots on the all-Big South’s all-conference wrestling squad.
Senior Kain Sanders, who captured fourth place during the Class AA individual state meet at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, along with fifth-place state medalists Jesse Potts and Max Olson, led the Red Bulls’ all-league honorees.
Sophomore Rylan Cutler and junior Carver Rohman, a pair of individual state qualifiers, joined seventh-grader Maddex Faber, senior Alec Thompson and junior Aden Welcome as the Red Bulls’ representatives on the all-Big South grappling roster.
The elite eight Fairmont/Martin County West wrestlers combined to guide the Red Bulls to the all-conference East Division crown and a sixth-place showing at the Class AA state team competition in St. Paul.
Blue Earth Area seniors Kean Hicks and Adam Schavey, a pair of Class A individual state qualifiers, also etched their respective names into all-league history.
Switching from the wrestling mats to the floor exercise, vault, uneven parallel bars and balance beam, two Martin County Area Magic gymnasts and two Blue Earth Area Bucs netted spots on the all-Big South Conference lineup.
The Magic’s senior tandem of leading all-arounder Ellie Hernes and high-scoring specialist Ellie Schultze joined Bucs’ leading scorer sophomore Addison Armstrong and junior all-arounder Haley Kalis as members of the league’s East Division lineup for their diligent performances.
Moving from the chalked equipment to the icy arena surface, Fairmont Area senior defender Mackenzie Householder closed out her stellar prep hockey career as a first-team all-Big South choice for the 2021-22 campaign. Householder topped the Cardinals in scoring this winter.
Senior defender Eli Anderson and junior forward Brock Lutterman rounded out Fairmont Area’s selections by being tabbed first team and honorable mention, respectively, for boys hockey this winter.
Anderson and Lutterman played key roles in the Cardinals making a nine-game improvement in the win column in 2021-22.
