Twitter overload causes writer to ‘preet’
FAIRMONT — ‘Tis the prep sports season for Twitter overload.
Every time I think I should tweet information about area sporting events, I click on my account and discover there are a dozen notifications — some seemingly only seconds after the topic has occurred.
Thought to self — am I a social media sloth or do I go with the conspiracy theory that either area sports media members are clairvoyant, better informed than me or spend way too much time on their cell phones?
With that printed for your old-school perusal, I won’t waste any more column space.
First, the Section 3 champion Martin County Red Bulls — comprised of wrestlers from Martin County West and Fairmont High Schools — open their third consecutive Class AA state team tournament against Watertown-Mayer in a 9 a.m. quarterfinal Thursday, March 3, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
If the No. 5-seeded Red Bulls defeat the No. 4-seeded Royals, they would most likely face No. 1-seeded and three-time defending state champion Simley in a 1 p.m. semifinal later that day. If not, the consolation semifinals are scheduled for 11 a.m.
Both the third-place and consolation dual meets are set for 5 p.m., with the state championship slated for 7 p.m.
If you don’t want to stand in a long line at the Xcel, tickets can be ordered online through the Minnesota State High School League.
Another important aspect to remember … be sure to bring a mask — they’re required at MSHSL events.
My next non-Twitter preet (printed tweet), the Fairmont Area Cardinals boys hockey team’s play-in playoff game against Minnesota River (St. Peter combined with Le Sueur-Henderson) — originally set for Tuesday — will be played at 7 p.m. tonight at Martin County Arena in Fairmont.
If the No. 8-seeded Cardinals collar the No. 9-seeded Bulldogs, they advance to the Section 3A hockey quarterfinals against the No. 1-seeded New Ulm Area Eagles at 7 p.m. Thursday at the New Ulm Civic Center.
Continuing on the ice, my next note pertains to the Fairmont PeeWee ‘B’ hockey team capturing third place in last weekend’s district tournament to qualify for regional play.
Preston Cepress netted four goals, Preston Geerdes scored twice and goalie Kaden Olson made 15 saves to power Fairmont to an opening 8-1 victory over New Ulm. Axel Chapman and Noah Meixell chipped in one goal apiece.
Redwood Falls edged Fairmont in a high-octane second-round clash, 9-8. Chapman produced a team-best hat trick, Meixell found the twine twice, while Cepress, Geerdes and Hunter Thate chipped in one goal each. Olson turned away 26 opposing shots in the showdown.
Dayton Draper collected three goals, Geerdes and Cepress tallied two each, while Olson amassed 22 stops to pace Fairmont’s 7-3 third-round triumph over Windom.
Fairmont edged Worthington 7-6 in overtime to capture third place and a regional bid. Cepress erupted for four goals, while Draper, Bryce Ihrke and Hunter Olson contributed one goal apiece to net the win. Kaden Olson recorded an incredible 34 saves to pocket the victory between the pipes.
Next preet, congratulations to Martin County Area’s Ellie Hernes and Ellie Schultze, along with Blue Earth Area’s Addison Armstrong and Haley Kalis, for being selected to the all-Big South Conference’s East Division gymnastics team.
The Magic gymnastics roster experienced countless injuries that limited its team scoring, but Hernes proved a stabilizing force and topped MCA’s point production in her role as an all-arounder in 2021-22.
Schultze also continued to generate key points individually by executing her high-level routines on the balance beam and uneven bars.
Non-social media info about area prep basketball features three programs. The first tipoff of the postseason belongs to No. 6-seeded Martin County West playing host to No. 11-seeded Madelia at 7 p.m. Thursday night in Sherburn in a Section 2A, play-in game.
The No. 2-seeded Fairmont Cardinals (21-3) then play host to No. 7-seeded Pipestone Area in a 7 p.m. Saturday night Section 3AA, South Sub-Section quarterfinal girls basketball clash at Cardinal Gym in Fairmont.
And finally, the Fairmont Cardinal boys basketball team plays host to Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial at 7:30 p.m. this Friday night at Cardinal Gym in a regular-season game. The non-league clash was set for Tuesday, but was weathered out.
Sorry it’s not on Twitter, but maybe with a little inspirational push from either Alexis Cubit at the Charlotte Observer or Kyle McAreavy at the Jefferson City (Mo.) News Tribune, I’ll do a better job of bringing info to you via the internet side of the world instead of preets.
