FAIRMONT — The Luverne Cardinals increased their winning streak to four games, courtesy of a 4-1 Big South Conference boys hockey victory over the Fairmont Area Cardinals at Martin County Arena on Tuesday night.

“Every time there was a chance for a battle, (Luverne) was there,” Cardinals head coach Dylan VanBrocklin said. “They had support where we lacked that support the first couple of periods.”

Luverne got on the scoreboard first midway through the opening period, although it appeared that Fairmont Area was able to respond less than three minutes later with a goal by forward Nate Rakness. However, the goal would be waved off due to the net being knocked loose during the play.

Capitalizing on the shift in momentum following the disallowed goal, Luverne rattled off three tallies in the second period, all of which occurring just a little more than three and a half minutes apart. Despite a late Fairmont Area goal which would be the only score of the third period, Luverne would be able to keep its winning streak alive.

Four different Luverne players found the back of the net, with forwards Brock Behrend, Tucker Dammann and Owen Sudenga, along with defenseman Henry Hartquist, each contributing a goal in the winning effort.

Sudenga would lead Luverne’s effort in points with two assists on top of his goal, as Behrend added an assist as well. Defenseman Blaik Bork also collected a multi-point game with a pair of assists on the night.

For Fairmont Area, forward Hartley Aust claimed the team’s lone goal of the contest, as defensemen Eli Anderson and Brock Lutterman each chipped in an assist on the play. The helper also allowed Anderson to capture his team-leading 26th point of the season.

Luverne goaltender Tyler Arends picked up the win on the strength of 32 saves on 33 shots, while Fairmont Area goaltender Carson Johnson made 19 saves on 23 chances.

Fairmont Area (6-14) will next play at home against Worthington in a Big South matchup on Thursday night, as Luverne (12-9) heads back home against Minnesota River in another Big South contest on Friday night.
