Packers post 2-0 hockey win over Cardinals

AUSTIN -- Kate Holtz and Sarah Wangen delivered goals, while netminder Kyia Radford-Garcia produced a shutout to propel the Austin Packers to a 2-0 nonconference hockey win over the Fairmont Area Cardinals on Monday night in Austin.

After Radford-Garcia and Fairmont Area goalie Rachel O'Connor each stonewalled their opposing offenses in a scoreless opening period, Wangen converted an assist from AJ Barrera into the contest's first goal at the 12:34 mark of the second segment.

Holtz then produced an insurance goal for Austin by taking a pass from Allie Davidson and lighting the lamp at the 7:15 juncture of the third period. It was Holtz's 29th goal and 52nd point of the season.

O'Connor generated a game-best 35 saves between the pipes for the Cardinals, while Radford-Garcia finished with 27 stops.

The Cardinals were 0-for-3 on power-play opportunities, while the Packers were 0-for-1.

Fairmont Area (7-12-2) awaits the results of the seeding meeting to determine its opponent, time and location for a Section 3A playoff game on Thursday, Feb. 10.
