Murphy’s goal lifts Cardinals to OT victory

BENSON — Brooklyn Murphy produced the game-winning goal only 51 seconds into overtime to propel the Fairmont Area Cardinals to a 6-5 triumph over the Morris/Benson Area Storm during non-league hockey action Saturday in Benson.

Murphy’s unassisted net-finding shot helped Fairmont Area complete the two-game seasonal sweep against MBA. The Cardinals defeated the Storm by a 7-4 decision on Friday night in Benson.

Macy Militello scored the first of her two goals in unassisted fashion to stake the visiting Cardinals to a 1-0 lead with 9:38 remaining in the opening period.

Karlie Bruns, however, countered for the Storm by connecting for an unassisted goal at the 8:13 juncture to knot the game at 1-all.

Kortney Sanasack then generated the first of her game-high four goals by cashing in a double-assist from Allison Michaelson and Taryn Picht for a 2-1 MBA margin with just 1:25 left in the first frame.

The Cardinals’ Abi Sundeen opened the second segment by smacking home the equalizer off a pass from Hannah Goerndt with only 33 seconds elapsed.

Sanasack edged the Storm out to a 3-2 lead by cashing in a pass from Bruns with 4:28 to go in the second frame before Bella Larson answered for the Cardinals with an unassisted goal just 12 seconds after Sanasack’s second score.

Karissa Newville and Militello collected back-to-back goals in the third period to put Fairmont Area ahead 5-3, but Sanasack would single-handedly knot the game and force overtime. Karissa Newville converted Alexis Newville’s assist into a goal, while Militello utilized Shaye Dietz’s set-up pass to net a goal.

Sanasack later delivered an unassisted goal before adding her fourth of the contest off a double-assist from Picht and Michaelson with 5:33 remaining in regulation.

Murphy then put the notch in the win column by scoring first in the overtime.

Rachel O’Connor turned away 31 shots on net to earn the victory for the Cardinals.

Fairmont Area (6-10-2) plays host to New Ulm at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.
