Cardinal girls hockey silences Storm

Karissa Newville

BENSON — Siblings Karissa Newville and Alexis Newville combined for three goals and two assists to help steer the Fairmont Area Cardinals to a 7-4 nonconference girls hockey victory over the Morris Benson Area Storm on Friday night in Benson.

Forward Karissa Newville had a two-goal performance, while Alexis Newville collected one goal and two helpers to help the Cardinals snap a four-game losing skid.

Karissa Newville nabbed both of Fairmont Area’s goals in the first period as the Cardinals took an early 2-1 lead. The Cardinals’ offense exploded in the second segment as they pulled ahead at 5-2 and did not look back, going on to take a three-goal advantage to claim the first game of the weekend doubleheader, although the team would be outshot by the Storm 27-21.

Forward Emily Sokoloski also put together a three-point game with a goal and two helpers for Fairmont Area, with Brooklyn Murphy adding an insurance goal in the second period, with Macy Militello and Jozie Hoefker also finding the back of the net in the second and third periods, respectively, to help increase the Cardinals’ lead.

Maia Goerndt and Jadyn Musser picked up their first assists of the season, as Goerndt had the secondary assist on Militello’s goal and Musser would claim the lone helper on Hoefker’s tally. Also getting on the scoresheet were Hannah Goerndt, Abigail Sundeen, Isabella Larson and Corene Moeller, who each contributed an assist apiece.

The Cardinals were also able to kill off all three Storm power-play opportunities in the winning effort.

On the Morris/Benson Area side, Karlie Bruns added to her overall team lead in goals scored with a second period marker to push her season total to 24, to go along with a first period assist. Kortney Sanasack also netted a multi-point game, as she scored the team’s opening goal along with an assist late in the third period.

The Cardinals (5-10-2) will remain in Benson to play the second game of the doubleheader against the Storm (1-14-1) at 11 a.m. today.
