Knights cage Jaguars for 5th straight win; No. 4 MCW stays unbeaten

GRANADA — Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial junior guard Zack Wells scored a game-high 19 points to guide the Knights to a 60-40 Valley Conference basketball victory over the Truman/Martin Luther/ Granada-Huntley-East Chain Jaguars on Thursday night in Granada.
The Knights became the first team in the conference to reach the 10-win mark, along with extending their winning streak to five consecutive games.
Wells was nearly perfect shooting from the free throw line, sinking 8 of 9, while also converting on one 3-pointer, as LCWM outscored the Jaguars 33-17 during the second half. The hometown Jaguars only trailed 27-23 at intermission.
Junior Drew Dahl contributed to the Knights’ victory by netting 12 points on the strength of making three shots from behind the 3-point arc to join Wells as the only other LCWM player to reach double digits in scoring.
Senior post player Adam Heckman continued his string of double-double performances by collecting team-bests of 17 points and 14 rebounds to top the Jaguars. Heckman made six field goals and was nearly perfect at the free throw line by sinking 5 of 6.
Carter Fox connected on a pair of 2-point field goals and one 3-pointer to highlight reaching double digits in scoring for the Jaguars with 10 points. Fox also distributed three assists, while teammate Jakob Fischer pocketed six steals.
Wells also doled out six assists to top the Knights.
Truman/Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain (4-6) will next play on Tuesday night on the road against Madelia in another conference game, while Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial (10-2) plays host to Nicollet on Tuesday night.

Martin County West 70, Nicollet 40 — The Class A No. 4-ranked Mavericks maintained their undefeated record by coasting to a 30-point triumph over the Raiders during Valley Conference action Thursday night in Nicollet.
Zach Anderson scored a game-leading 18 points and distributed four assists for MCW, which built a 44-12 halftime advantage and never looked back in the second segment.
Mitchell Weber netted 16 points and doled out three assists for the Mavericks, while teammate Tanner Sinn produced 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds in the win.
Tate Leiding chipped in six points for the Mavericks, which scorched the Nicollet nylon nets on 20 of 31 shots from 2-point distance.
MCW also connected on 8 of 24 from 3-point range and sank 6 of 9 at the free throw line.
Conner Martens tossed in a team-best 17 points to top the Raiders, which hit 9 of 10 from the charity stripe.
Martin County West (8-0) plays host to the Fairmont Cardinals in a 7 p.m. nonconference contest on Saturday night in Trimont.
Nicollet (4-5) travels to Montgomery on Tuesday night to face Tri-City United in a non-league game.
