BLUE EARTH — Prep girls basketball fans filtering into the Blue Earth Area gymnasium bleachers on Thursday afternoon had no idea what was in store for them during the Buc Holiday Invitational’s championship clash.

The Jackson County Central Huskies and Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/ Martin Luther Jaguars blistered the nets for a head-turning 174 combined points that left scorekeepers, statisticians and media members double-checking and recalculating numbers.

Sadie Voss and Maci Farmer combined to singe the nets for an eye brow-raising 72 points, 15 rebounds, 15 steals and eight assists to help the high-octane Huskies fend off the upset-minded Jaguars, 94-80, for the tournament crown.

Voss and Farmer entered the two-day holiday event with the respective fifth- (27.4 points per game) and 15th-best (22.6 ppg) scoring clips in the state, according to the Star Tribune’s Minnesota girls basketball hub.

“I’d say we play off of each other well,” said Voss, who delivered a game-best 37 points on the strength of five 3-pointers and a 14-for-16 performance at the free throw line to go with seven rebounds, seven steals and four assists. “She (Farmer) is one of the best shooters I’ve ever seen, and she was ‘on’ today.”

Farmer netted 35 points on 12-for-20 shooting — including four 3s — and 7 of 9 at the charity stripe to complement eight boards, eight steals and four assists.

“That’s why those two are in the top 20 in scoring in the state,” Jaguars’ head coach T.J. Pytleski said in reference to Voss and Farmer. “But I thought we gained some confidence by staying within striking distance of them for most of the game.

“McKenna Benck turned in a career game with 25 points, but our entire team really showed we can play with a really good program like Jackson (County Central). This game should help us down the stretch.”

Benck converted a traditional 3-point play to produce the first of four ties on the non-league contest, Jenna Balcom sank two of her 9-for-10 free throw-shooting performance to knot it again at 7-all before Benck hit a runner-and-1 at 10-10.

Balcom, who finished with a double-double effort of 15 points and 10 rebounds, threaded a pass to Benck for a right-corner 2-pointer to swing an early 12-10 lead to the Jaguars.

Olivia Mattson, who delivered 10 points off the bench, later cashed in one of Katelyn Diegnau’s four assists to give the Jaguars their final lead of the contest at 18-15 with 10:39 remaining in the opening half.

Unfortunately for the Jaguars, the Huskies’ lethal 1-2 scoring tandem of Voss and Farmer began locking on target from long range to trigger an 18-4 offensive landslide.

Farmer banked a 3 for an 18-all tie before hitting a runner in the paint. Farmer then reeled off seven of the Huskies’ next 13 points to build a 33-22 lead.

After Brooke Grathwohl hit Diegnau for two of her 12 points on a low-post runner to inch the Jaguars within 33-25, Voss unloaded an 8-point payload from long distance — including two 3-point missiles to restore a double-digit gap at 41-27.

Benck, however, reeled off six unanswered points to narrow the Jaguars’ deficit to 46-38 with less than 2 minutes left before intermission.

Voss, however, countered by single-handedly accounting for every point of a 10-1 surge to bridge halftime and widen JCC’s lead to 56-39.

Balcom’s low-post leaner off an assist from Mallery Geistfeld inched the Jaguars within 73-62 with 7 minutes left in regulation, but Voss and Farmer proved too much firepower to match down the stretch.

Kylee Wenzel finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and three steals for the Huskies.

Diegnau added a team-best five steals to her 12-point, four-assist effort for the Jaguars, Geistfeld contributed eight points, seven rebounds and three steals, while Grathwohl chipped in seven points.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther (4-3) plays host to Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial on Friday, Jan. 7, in Granada.

Jackson County Central (8-2) travels to Fairmont on Tuesday night for a Big South Conference clash at Cardinal Gym.
