TRIMONT — Martin County West’s Zach Anderson and Tanner Sinn proved double double-double trouble for Westbrook-Walnut Grove during Saturday night’s non-league basketball clash.

The 6-foot-6 Anderson collected game-bests of 17 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and four blocked shots, while the 6-3 Sinn produced 14 points, a co-game-best 10 boards and four steals to help the Mavericks short-circuit the late-charging Chargers, 47-38, in Trimont.

Ironically, the Mavericks extended their lead to 20 behind Mitchell Weber’s net-snapping 3-pointer from the top of the key with 5:50 remaining in regulation, but eventually had to fend off WWG’s late comeback.

Dan Kleven, who neared double-double territory by netting team-bests of 13 points and eight rebounds, and Andre Vue, however, combined equally for 10 points to ignite the Chargers’ game-ending 12-1 run.

“We did a good job of building the lead, but we have to work on doing a better job of closing it out during the second half,” said MCW head coach Cliff Anderson. “It looked like a typical ugly first-of-the-season Saturday night game.

“Don’t get me wrong — I’m very happy that we won the game.”

After Cole VanDeWiele drained a 3-pointer to inch the Chargers within 5-4 early in the game, Zach Anderson, Sinn and Weber combined forces to reel off 11 unanswered points to give MCW breathing room at 16-4 with 10 minutes left before halftime.

Anderson sank back-to-back trifectas off assists from Owen Runkle and Weber, respectively, before Weber threaded a perfect pass to Anderson for a low-post lay-in.

Weber then penetrated via a dribble-drive before kicking out a pass to Sinn for a top-of-the-key 3-ball.

Weber and Tate Leiding each dropped home treys for the Mavericks during the final 5 minutes before intermission to double the home team’s lead to 22-11 with 3:36 remaining.

VanDeWiele tossed in his second 3-pointer of the game off one of Kole Curry’s three assists to close the Chargers’ gap to 24-14, but Anderson’s end-to-end charge regained the momentum for the Mavericks.

Anderson cleared a defensive carom, navigated traffic during an end-to-end beat-the-buzzer drive and utilized a deft shooting touch to toss in a last-second runner for a 26-14 margin.

After Kleven swooshed a right-wing 3 to narrow WWG’s deficit to 32-19, Weber and Sinn delivered the majority of the scoring behind an ensuing 8-2 mini-surge to widen the gap to nine points with 7:28 remaining in the second half.

Kleven and Andre Vue each connected for a 3-pointer and a baseline jumper to whittle the Mavericks’ lead to only nine by game’s end.

Austin Parker and VanDeWiele scored seven points apiece for the Chargers, while Brady Ross tossed in six.

Martin County West (2-0) plays host to St. Clair at 7 p.m. Tuesday night in Trimont in a Valley Conference contest.

Westbrook-Walnut Grove (1-1) hits the road to Windom Area on Tuesday night for a non-league clash.
