Cardinal tracksters announce postseason awards

FAIRMONT – The Fairmont track & field teams have announced their yearly awards and the Cardinals who made it to the academic all-state team.

Hudson Artz was named the Cardinal boys MVP for the 2021 season, while Andrew Johnson earned the Captains’ Teammate award.

Hank Artz earned the rookie of the year honor and Kainen Craig was named this year’s coaches’ attitude award winner.

David Maakestad was named as the winner for outstanding track events, while Armando Hernandez took the award for outsanding field events.

On the girls’ side, Ellie Hernes was named most valuable, while Corene Moeller took the captains’ teammate award.

Macy Hanson claimed the honor of rookie of the year and Hannah Neusch took home the coaches’ attitude award.

Laura Thompson earned the honor of outstanding track events, while Sabrina Segar claimed the outstanding field events award.

Many members of both Cardinal teams joined the Academic All-State sqaud.

On the girls’ side, Karalyn Closs, Brooklyn Meyer, Neusch, Segar, Hernes, Ellie Schultze, Thompson and Moeller all earned the award for high achievement in academics.

For the boys, Craig, Hudson Artz and David Maakestad earned the academic honor.

In this year’s slightly altered season, the Cardinal boys ended with a record of 37 wins and seven losses going into the Sub-Section meet.

The team ended second among 26 teams in Section 2A and won Sub-Section 5 for the 11th year in a row.

The Cardinal boys took second among mid-sized Big South Conference teams.

The Fairmont boys took home two medals from the Minnesota State High School League State Meet at St. Michael-Albertville High School on June 18, with both coming on the speed of Hudson Artz.

Fairmont’s girls took a record of 44 wins and eight losses into the Sub-Section 5 Meet, which the Cardinal girls also won for the 11th consecutive year.

The Fairmont girls also ended second among 26 teams in Section 2A and took the championship for mid-sized Big South Conference schools.

Although there wasn’t an in-person event, the Cardinal girls took sixth as an at-large bid in the True Team State virtual meet.

Fairmont also placed seventh at the Minnesota State High School League State Meet’s girls track & field team competition at St. Michael-Albertville High School on June 18.

The Cardinal girls took home four state medals, with both Thompson and Hernes earning two.
