Meyer, No. 13-ranked North Union double up Spencer in softball clash

Emily Meyer

SWEA CITY — Emily Meyer utilized both her strong pitching arm and lethal lumber inside the batter’s box to help the Iowa Class 2A, No. 13-ranked North Union Warriors double up the Spencer Tigers, 10-5, during nonconference softball action Thursday night.

The hard-throwing Meyer demonstrated outstanding command of her deliveries by recording a game-best 11 strikeouts, while issuing only one walk in seven innings inside the chalked circle. The right-hander allowed five runs — only two earned — on eight hits to earn the complete-game victory.

Meyer also wielded a potent bat offensively, generating a game-best four RBIs, with three coming via a three-run home run during the bottom of the fifth inning.

Leadoff batter Sam Nielsen set the table for the North Union lineup by collecting three hits and scoring one run, while teammate Shelby Fraker went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored.

Olivia Von Bank doubled home two runs for the Warriors, Maggie Engelby also smacked a double for one RBI, while Ella Ulrich went 2-for-4 with one RBI and crossed the plate twice.

Cassie Beadle contributed one single, one RBI and one run scored to the Warriors’ 11-hit offensive performance.

The Warriors scored a solo run in the bottom of the second inning before erupting for five more runs during the third. Meyer’s three-run HR accounted for all of the green-and-white’s run production in the fifth before the home team tacked on one more run in the sixth.

North Union (9-1) plays host to Garner-Hayfield/Ventura tonight in a 6 p.m. Top of Iowa Conference contest in Swea City.
