Meyer’s pitching powers North Union softball to 2 wins

BUFFALO CENTER, Iowa — Ace right-hander Emily Meyer amassed a game-best 10 strikeouts without issuing a walk in hurling a five-hitter, while Libby Stevens smacked a triple to help generate a game-leading three RBIs to power the North Union Warriors to a 14-2 run-rule softball rout over the North Iowa Bison on Wednesday night.

Meyer allowed two earned runs on five hits in pitching the five-inning distance to earn the complete-game win.

Olivia Von Bank doubled to produce two RBIs for the Warriors, Meyer and Vanessa Von Bank singled and drove in two runs apiece, while Stevens also scored two runs.

Sam Nielsen, Cassie Beadle and Maggie Engelby all singled and netted one RBI for North Union, with Beadle scoring three runs and Nielsen crossing the plate twice. Kaylee Meyer and Ella Ulrich both added one RBI.

North Union (2-0) plays host to Forest City at 6 p.m. tonight in Swea City.

North Union 7, Estherville-Lincoln Central 1 — Emily Meyer recorded 12 strikeouts in firing a six-hit complete-game gem, while Maggie Engelby doubled home three runs in a seven-run top of the sixth to engineer the Warriors’ six-run victory over the Midgets during season-opening action Tuesday night.

Meyer displayed stellar control of her pitches, issuing only one walk and allowing just one run in seven innings of work to earn the victory.

Trailing 1-0 through five complete innings, Ella Ulrich, Sam Nielsen and Cassie Beadle triggered North Union’s offensive explosion with back-to-back bunts and a slap hit, respectively.

Olivia Von Bank, Meyer and Vanessa Von Bank followed with RBI singles before Engelby launched her bases-clearing double to left field. Engelby later scored on a wild pitch.

Nielsen and Beadle each went 2-for-4, while Libby Stevens chipped in a single for the Warriors.
