Fairmont girls golfers win St. Peter Invitational crown

Maggy Totzke

ST. PETER — A 45-minute rain delay, 22 mph winds and a 20-degree drop in the temperature from the first tee time to the final green could not keep the Fairmont Cardinal girls golfers from capturing the five-team St. Peter Invitational on Tuesday.

Maggy Totzke, Anika Haugen and Solveig Senf produced a respective 3-4-5 overall individual showing to power Fairmont to a winning team total of 365 — 16 strokes better than host St. Peter’s runner-up score (381) at Shoreland Country Club in St. Peter.

Blue Earth Area pocketed third with a 430, Waseca finished fourth at 432, while Redwood Valley proved one golfer short — three — of posting a complete team score.

“The girls persevered through the stoppage and the elements today to pull off the team win,” said Fairmont head coach Brad Haugen.

Totzke generated a team-best six pars, including four on the back nine holes, to net a third-place, 18-hole round of 44-42-86 to top the Cardinals’ winning ways.

Haugen and Senf then captured fourth and fifth, respectively, to pack top-five scoring punch to Fairmont’s first-place performance. Haugen sank two pars to highlight her score of 46-44-90, while Senf connected for three pars — all on the front side of Shoreland — to post a 44-48-92.

Lauren Davis edged teammate Brynn Gustafson by a mere one shot to net the fourth and final counting total for Fairmont.

Davis tied for eighth place overall with a 52-45-97, including three pars, while Gustafson garnered 10th place individually with back-to-back 49s for a total of 98. Gustafson made two pars.

Bailey Martinson completed the Cardinals’ winning effort by firing a 58-48-106 to share a piece of 15th place overall. Martinson dropped home four pars, including three on the back nine holes.

Kylie Rosenau shared 13th place overall with a round of 55-59-104 to pace Blue Earth Area’s third-place team effort. Rosenau birdied the par-5 second hole to highlight her performance, while chipping in one par.

Rylan Storbeck tied Fairmont’s Martinson for 15th place by carding back-to-back 53s for a 106, including two pars, to net second on the Bucs’ team, while Payten Gudahl and Katelyn Storbeck rounded out BEA’s counting marks on the event.

Gudahl claimed 19th place with a 56-53-109, including two pars, while Katelyn Storbeck finished two shots back at 55-56-111 to place 20th.

Lyndsey Borris and Jordon Smith completed the Bucs’ effort by finishing 23rd and 24th, respectively.

Borris penciled in an 18-hole round of 65-60-125, while Smith chipped in a 70-57-127. Both Borris and Smith made one par.

The Fairmont girls golf team plays host to the Cardinal Invitational at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Rose Lake Golf Course in Fairmont. The Blue Earth Area girls golf lineup travels to Windom on Friday for a dual meet before competing in the Cardinal Invitational on Saturday in Fairmont.
