FAIRMONT — Martin County Area sophomore Anna Bachenberg modified a common idiom to, “It’s difficult to keep a good gymnast down.”

Bachenberg returned to the starting lineup after missing last Thursday’s dual meet due to a back-of-the-head injury that required eight staples and delivered a season’s-best all-around total to help power the Magic’s season-high team score on Tuesday night.

Bachenberg generated 35.35 points to earn runner-up all-around honors behind teammate Sabrina Segar’s winning score of 35.65, while Hailee Schuett contributed a fourth-place total of 32.625 to pace MCA’s 137.5-132.75 Big South Conference victory over the St. Peter Saints at the Live Fit Sport & Wellness Center.

“It was good to see Anna came back right away with confidence after suffering the injury in practice last week,” said Magic head coach Beraiah Peterson, whose lineup eclipsed its previous season-high mark of 136.525 against St. James Area on Feb. 18. “We (coaching staff) thought about just competing her on just (balance) beam and (uneven parallel) bars tonight, but she told us in practice that she was ready to go in the all-around. We went for it and it definitely paid off scoring-wise.”

Bachenberg joined Segar and Hannah Linse in the vault’s top four by blocking off the table, elevating and twisting her Tsukahara, and then planting a solid landing for a second-place score of 9.225. Segar nailed her second Tsuk for a first-place mark of 9.4, while Linse rotated a handspring-full vault for fourth place at 8.8. St. Peter’s Trista Landsom, who captured third in the all-around with a 34.425, claimed third on the vault at 8.95.

Segar then executed her bail from the high to low bar and spun two tight giants to pocket top honors on the unevens at 8.675, but Trista Landsom led the Saints’ 2-3-4 finish on the piece of equipment.

Trista Landsom took second at 8.575, Makayla Moline was third at 7.9, while Trista’s twin sister — Addison Landsom — finished fourth at 7.75.

While MCA narrowly missed matching St. Peter on the unevens — 31.8-31.775, Schuett netted the Magic’s second spot behind Segar in the event by competing her giants en route to a 7.725, with Bachenberg next at 7.7.

“That was one of two firsts for Hailee this season. She competed her giants on bars, and later, she landed her one-and-a-half (tumbling sequence) during her opening pass on floor,” said Peterson.

Schuett claimed third place on floor with an 8.725, while Segar and Bachenberg delivered their usual 1-2 scoring punch at 9.475 and 9.225, respectively. Segar turned a back one-and-a-half during her initial pass, connected on a front one-and-a-half during her second run and finished with a full.

Bachenberg and Ellie Schultze garnered the top two spots for the Magic on the balance beam. Bachenberg executed a back handspring before sticking a pair of back walkovers en route to a 9.2, while Schultze performed a one-handed front walkover and an aerial to net second place at 8.75.

Martin County Area (7-1) travels to Waseca on Thursday night.
