FAIRMONT — The Red Bulls’ bench erupted as Blue Earth Area’s Adam Schavey took a 9-2 decision at 182 pounds.

Class AA No. 3-ranked Martin County’s Gage Cyphers held off a pin and put the dual meet out of reach for the Class A No. 5-ranked Bucs on Thursday night in Fairmont.

Oddly, the lost decision left the Red Bulls leading 38-18 with three matches to go, mathematically preventing the Bucs from a team triumph. Two BEA pins and a Martin County pin later, the Red Bulls finished a 44-30 win over their Big South Conference wrestling rival.

The Bucs entered the 182-pound matchup hoping to recreate their performance from Jan. 29 in Fairmont, when BEA pinned the final four Red Bulls, but came up short for a 42-27 loss.

Unlike the teams’ first matchup, the Bucs jumped ahead early.

Cooper Peterson put the Bucs ahead 6-0 when he pinned 106-pound opponent Rylan Cutler in 1:18, then BEA’s Caleb Langager used a takedown and a three-point near-fall to build a 5-0 decision over Cooper Steuber at 113 pounds.

Jesse Potts got the Red Bulls on track at 120 when he pinned Carson Sturtz in 3:00 to bring the Red Bulls within 9-6.

No. 1-ranked 126-pounder Jaxson Rohman then gave the Red Bulls a lead with a pin of Blair Lunz in 27 seconds before the No. 8-ranked 132-pounder Kain Sanders put the Red Bulls up 18-9 when he shoved Brody Anderson’s shoulders to the mat in 1:47.

The Red Bulls’ No. 3-ranked 138-pounder Lucas Jagodzinske and BEA’s Ty Peterson battled to a 2-0 first period, with Jagodzinske leading. Jagodzinske then added three points in the second period on an escape from the down starting position and a takedown.

Peterson nearly escaped Jagodzinske’s control and reached his feet, but Jagodzinske used the momentum to flip Peterson through the air onto his back for a pin in 3:24.

Aden Welcome took down Parker Meyers in the first period at 145 pounds before Meyers escaped to go into the first stoppage down 2-1. Meyers started the second period in the down position and escaped to create a tie at 2 going into the final period.

Welcome escaped the down starting position, then took Meyers to the mat with 53 seconds remaining to create a 5-2 advantage before Meyers forced a reversal in the final second, leaving Welcome with a 5-4 decision.

Martin County’s No. 2-ranked 145-pounder Connor Simmonds needed only 1:32 to dispatch Cory Kitchel at 152 pounds, building a 33-9 Red Bull lead.

BEA’s No. 2-ranked 170-pounder Max Ehrich then moved down to 160 pounds where he was able to pin Carver Rohman in 4:51 to get the Bucs their first points since 113.

The Red Bulls’ No. 5-ranked 152-pounder Blake Jagodzinske jumped all the way up to 170 pounds to face Kean Hicks, forcing a 16-1 technical fall with 28 seconds remaining in the matchup to create the 38-15 Martin County lead heading into 182.

“We’re kind of at the midway point in the season and we’ve got everybody where we need them,” Red Bulls head coach Adam Williamson said of his team’s performance. “The guys wrestled hard and wrestled well tonight.

“It’s hard to beat a good team multiple times and it showed tonight. They (BEA) put up a few more points on the board and got a couple of key wins right away that we got last time.”

BEA’s Schavey worked his way to a 9-2 decision over Cyphers, before No. 9-ranked 195-pounder Nick Frank pinned Wyatt Williamson in 3:39.

Max Olson and Logan Johnson battled to a 7-5 Johnson lead going into the final period. Olson started in the down position and forced a reversal before turning his control into a pin at 4:59.

The Bucs’ Luke Mertens then needed only 1:16 to pin Alec Thompson at 285 pounds.

“Our effort was really good, that’s the bottom line,” BEA head coach Randy Wirtjes said. ” … you can learn as much from a loss as you can from a win. Our guys went out and competed, we had a lot of turnarounds from last time. … We just decided before the match that we would go straight up and try to compete. Sometimes we can move our lineup around, but it’s pretty hard against these guys (Red Bulls) because they’re so solid in their lineup.

“If we can wrestle this hard in every match, we will be in every match.”

Both the Red Bulls and BEA worked their way to wins during their other triangular matchup. Martin County beat Waseca 54-13 to start the triangular, then the Bucs dominated the Bluejays for a 66-8 win.

The Red Bulls pinned four Bluejays, claimed four forfeits and won four decisions to build their win over Waseca.

Sanders (3:22), Blake Jagodzinske (0:49), Williamson (3:31) and Olson (0:32) pinned their opponents. Cutler (6-5), Lucas Jagodzinske (5-0), Simmonds (5-1) and Cyphers (6-2) each won decisions.

Steuber (113), Jaxson Rohman (126), Welcome (145) and Carver Rohman (160) each took forfeits.

Class AA No. 4-ranked 120-pounder Mason Gehloff was the lone Bluejay to win two matches in the triangular. Gehloff took a major decision, 17-5, over the Red Bulls’ Potts, then built a technical fall, 25-10, in 3:33 to beat BEA’s Sturtz.

JD Delgado took the other Bluejay win against Martin County, earning a 4-2 overtime victory over Thompson at heavyweight.

Four Bucs pinned their opponents, while BEA added a tech fall, a major decision and took five forfeits to beat the Bluejays.

Cooper Peterson (0:59), Hicks (0:41), Schavey (0:36) and Johnson (0:42) each pinned their respective opponents. Ty Peterson earned the 17-0 technical fall in 4:00 and Frank earned the 11-1 major decision.

Langager (113), Anderson (132), Meyers (145), Ehrich (160) and Mertens (285) took forfeits.

Along with Gehloff’s win for the Bluejays, Christian Rodriguez earned a 7-1 decision over Kitchel at 152.

The Red Bulls (15-1) go to Montgomery to face Tri-City United at 10 a.m. Saturday for dual-meet action. The Bucs (11-3) go to Pipestone for triangular action at 10 a.m. Saturday, facing Pipestone Area and Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg.
