Lourdes hockey skates by Fairmont Area
ROCHESTER — The Eagles soared past the Cardinals.
Rochester Lourdes beat Fairmont Area 9-1 during nonconference girls hockey action Tuesday night in Rochester.
Karissa Newville prevented the Cardinals from being shut out. Newville put Fairmont Area on the scoreboard with a goal off a double-assist from Hannah Goerndt and Emily Sokoloski with 6:58 left in the game.
Carmen Erickson scored the opening goal for Rochester Lourdes off a double-assist from Abby Wick and Maggie Hanzel with 12:20 left in the opening period, then Chasidy Buer used a double-helper from Erickson and Wick with 8:47 remaining.
Wick earned a first-period playmaker when she assisted Hanzel with 6:21 left, then Layla Rippentrop scored an unassisted goal with 15 seconds remaining to take a 4-0 lead into the first break.
Hanzel netted a hat trick with back-to-back goals to start the second period. She scored unassisted with 12:33 left, then used a double-helper from Wick and Erickson on a power-play opportunity with 9:23 remaining.
Wick then scored her first with 2:11 remaining in the middle segment off an assist from Hanzel on a second power-play goal.
Lizzie Pike opened the third-period scoring with an assist from Paige Gallagher, then Rippentrop gave the Eagles their final goal unassisted with 12:51 left in the matchup.
The Eagles outshot the Cardinals 45-14 in the matchup.
Fairmont Area netminder Hadley Artz made 36 saves in net, while Eagle goaltender Kiley Buer made 13 saves to net the win.
Fairmont Area (3-6) faces Windom in a Big South Conference clash at 7 p.m. Friday night in Windom.
