No. 4 Red Bulls don’t allow a point in triangular sweep

SHERBURN — A baker’s dozen.

The Class AA No. 4-ranked Martin County Red Bulls only had the chance to wrestle a total of 13 matches during Tuesday night’s triangular, but they made the most of the shortage.

The Red Bulls produced seven falls and one technical fall to go with a staggering 15 forfeits to trample the Luverne Cardinals, 81-0, and the Windom/Mt. Lake Cobras, 73-0, during double-dual action in Sherburn.

Martin County needed just 9 minutes to complete its lopsided win over Luverne. Jesse Potts earned a 10-4 decision over Riley Cowell during 120-pound action before No. 2-ranked 145-pounder Connor Simmonds bumped up to 152 to flatten Braydon Ripka in 1:10.

The Cardinals opted to give away a dozen forfeits.

“It was disappointing to get only two matches against Luverne, but Windom (Mt. Lake) gave us 11 matches and that’s what our guys needed — time on the mat,” said Red Bulls head coach Adam Williamson. “I thought we received a good effort from everyone tonight.

“Rylan (Cutler) got us off to a good start against Windom (Mt. Lake), and the rest of our guys followed suit.”

Cutler built a 6-2 opening-period lead over Preston Xayachak during 106-pound action before reeling off nine unanswered points during the final two frames to earn a 15-2 major decision.

Cooper Steuber rallied from a 5-3 deficit after two periods to deliver a 9-7 victory for the Red Bulls at 113. Steuber converted a takedown and a two-point near-fall during the early stages of the third period into a 7-6 edge over Cobra opponent Thavien Xayachak.

Steuber opted to cut Xayachak loose for a tying escape with less than a minute remaining before delivering the decisive takedown with 37 seconds to go.

Potts then disposed of Tucker Renquist in 2:33 at 120 to extend the Red Bulls’ lead to 13-0. Potts built a 5-0 first-period margin before pressing Renquist’s shoulders to the canvas to open the second.

No. 1-ranked 126-pounder Jaxson Rohman then utilized his textbook catch-and-release technique to amass a 20-3 technical fall over Noah Holmberg in the first 2-minute segment. Rohman recorded four takedowns in conjunction with four near-falls.

No. 8-ranked 132-pounder Kain Sanders also put on a technical clinic by rolling to a 13-3 major decision over Caden Swoboda. Sanders produced four takedowns and a reversal to fuel his offensive barrage.

Aden Welcome then traded two escapes to garner three takedowns before pinning Eagan Maras in just 35 seconds during 138-pound action to add six team points to the Red Bulls’ ledger.

Class AA No. 3-ranked 138-pounder Lucas Jagodzinske of the Red Bulls then locked up with Class A No. 1-ranked 138-pounder Kade Sammons of the Cobras by moving to the 145-pound spot in the night’s top showdown.

Sammons notched the initial takedown before Jagodzinske escaped. The highly-ranked pair then each took respective shots before Jagodzinske countered Sammons’ takedown attempt for two points and a 3-2 lead with 12 seconds left in the first frame.

Jagodzinske rode out Sammons from the top position during a scoreless second period before the Red Bull senior standout tallied an escape and a takedown during the third to cap a 6-2 victory.

Simmonds then coasted to an 8-3 lead over Trenton Renquist at 152 before hip-tossing his Cobra opponent to his back for a fall in 1:30.

No. 5-ranked 152-pounder Blake Jagodzinske then made the transition to 160 and needed only 39 seconds to flatten Matthew Ekstrom for six more team points.

Carver Rohman (170), Gage Cyphers (182) and Tristan Peterson (195) then received consecutive forfeits for Martin County before Max Olson and Alec Thompson put an exclamation mark on the meet.

Olson earned the quickest pin of the night by needing only 22 seconds to get his hand raised against Alex Altman at 220 before Thompson earned the slap of the canvas in 31 seconds over Cyrus Bjorklund at heavyweight.

The Red Bulls (6-0) play host to Class A No. 10-ranked Blue Earth Area and St. Peter at 5 p.m. Friday at Cardinal Gym in Fairmont.
