Fairmont tennis sweeps doubles to pace triumph

NEW ULM — The number three figured prominently into the Fairmont girls tennis lineup’s winning formula during Monday’s Big South Conference East Division dual meet in New Ulm.

The visiting Cardinals swept all three doubles matches, including a third consecutive victory by the tandem of Libby Totzke and Hope Klanderud at the No. 3 position in the bracket, to pace Fairmont’s 6-1 team triumph over the New Ulm Eagles.

Libby Totzke and Klanderud combined court skills to produce a 6-0, 6-1 victory over the Eagles’ Alex Vigil and Calyn Glaser to pack scoring punch to the Cardinals’ doubles-bracket sweep.

While Libby Totzke and Klanderud have teamed for all three divisional duals, Lauren Davis joined forces with her third different playing partner at No. 1 doubles and exited the New Ulm courts with another win. Davis and regular No. 1 singles netter Claire Nemmers combined to net a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Maddie O’Connor and Emily Guggisberg.

Fairmont siblings Lauren Green and Shannon Green teamed at No. 2 doubles to post a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Makenna Simpson and Marissa Todesco.

Briana Joseph, Maggy Totzke and Emily Hagen generated the three singles points to help improve Fairmont’s overall dual-meet record to 3-0 on the modified season.

Hagen needed a third segment to cap her winning ways at No. 3 singles. New Ulm opponent Malia Emerson won the opening set by a 6-1 margin before Hagen rallied for a 6-4 second-set win. Hagen downed Emerson in the supertiebreaker, 10-5.

Joseph moved from the No. 2 singles spot to No. 1 and defeated Makiah Otto in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, while Maggy Totzke climbed one spot to No. 2 singles to post back-to-back 6-2 set wins over Abby Hietala.

Lydia King generated the Eagles’ lone point in fending off a strong comeback by Abi Peyman at fourth singles, 6-4, 6-4.

Fairmont (3-0) travels to Sleepy Eye on Thursday to face River Valley in a 4:30 p.m. Big South Conference East Division dual meet.
