Nordquist, Smith win Interlaken golf crowns

FAIRMONT — Joe Nordquist and Amanda Smith earned their rightful places in the Interlaken Golf Course’s history books by capturing the 2020 men’s and women’s club championships, respectively, last week.

Smith carded a 6-over par, 18-hole round of 78 to edge Cat St. John’s runner-up score of 82 for the women’s trophy at the Fairmont-based course on July 22.

Joe Nordquist garnered the men’s individual crown by penciling in back-to-back even-par rounds of 72-72 before closing with an incredible nine-hole score of 33.

Nordquist’s first-place 45-hole total of 177 on Saturday proved eight strokes better than Chad Strauser’s second-place mark of 185 in the two-day championship competition that teed off last Thursday.

Ryan Stevens finished just one shot off of Strauser’s total to close with a third-place 186 in the championship flight.

Ron Kallheim netted a 36-hole score of 157 to edge runner-up Jason Hybbert (161) and John Korsmo (162) for top honors in the tournament’s first flight.

Mark Nordquist, Joe Nordquist’s father, fended off Randy Peyman to collect first place in the second flight, 163-165. Michael Thate pocketed third in the flight with a 168.

Tyler Klunder capped the winners by firing a 176 to collect top accolades in the third flight. Eric Hugoson (181) and Joel Armbrust (183) pocketed second and third place.
