No. 15 Warriors cage Cougars, 12-1

MANSON, Iowa — The Iowa Class 2A No. 15-ranked North Union Warriors made one final regular-season tune-up Friday night before the start of the softball playoffs next week.

Hope Steinberger, Olivia Von Bank and Sam Nielsen combined for 10 hits and eight RBIs, while ace right-hander Emily Meyer chalked up her 11th victory of the season to power North Union to a 12-1 nonconference rout of the Manson-Northwest Webster Cougars in Manson, Iowa.

Meyer held the Cougar bats in check for six innings, allowing only one run on five hits to notch the win. The Warriors’ freshman pitcher recorded a game-best seven strikeouts and displayed stellar control by not issuing a base-on-balls.

Lexi Vaske issued one walk while not registering a strikeout in pitching the bottom of the seventh inning for North Union. Vaske did not allow either a hit or a run during her relief appearance.

Warriors’ head coach Kim Price adjusted her batting order, moving Steinberger from the leadoff position to the clean-up spot. Steinberger did exactly that, producing a game-best four hits in five official at-bats, including a pair of doubles and a triple. Steinberger collected three RBIs and scored two runs.

Olivia Von Bank went 3-for-5 with a triple and a double to generate three RBIs for the Warriors. Von Bank also crossed the plate three times on the night.

Nielsen also went 3-for-5, including a double, to produce two RBIs, while teammate Kaylee Tirevold doubled home a run.

Maggie Engelby went 2-for-4 with one RBI for North Union, Ella Ulrich went 2-for-2 from the batter’s box, Cassie Beadle contributed one hit, while Vanessa Von Bank added an RBI.

North Union (11-4) opens the Iowa Class 2A, Region 5 quarterfinals against Lake Mills at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Manly, Iowa.

Manson-Northwest Webster closed out the regular season with a 4-11 record.
